Teofimo Lopez tests positive for COVID-19, bout vs. George Kambosos moved to Aug. 14

Teofimo Lopez has tested positive for COVID-19 and is symptomatic. His Saturday bout vs. George Kambosos that was scheduled to be in Miami, and the whole undercard has been moved to Aug. 14, Triller announced. Lopez, the unified lightweight champion and No. 5 on ESPN's pound-for-pound list, told ESPN he tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday morning in Las Vegas before his scheduled flight to Miami for fight week. He decided to remain in town rather than travel with his diagnosis. Lopez said he's running a high fever, has had trouble breathing and that his asthma makes dealing with COVID-19 more difficult. While the decision to postpone the fight was difficult, Lopez said, he could not recover in time for Saturday.

Buffalo Bills WR Cole Beasley addresses virus protocol concerns with NFLPA

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley said he spoke with the NFLPA soon after complaning about its jointly agreed-to policy with the NFL regarding COVID-19 protocols. The policy, which applies to training camp and the preseason, heavily restricts unvaccinated players while allowing vaccinated players to return to near normalcy -- which made Beasley question Thursday via his Twitter account whether "anyone will fight for the players." Beasley tweeted Friday morning a confirmation of The Athletic's report that the NFLPA had reached out to him and come to an understanding regarding certain aspects of the policy. Unvaccinated players will be required to test for COVID-19 every day and must wear masks throughout the team facility and during travel. They will also not be allowed to use the sauna/steam rooms, are subject to weight room capacity limits, and may not leave the team hotel to eat in restaurants or interact with anyone outside of the team traveling party during team travel.

Spectators barred from Tokyo Olympics venues amid Japan's COVID-19 state of emergency

Fans were barred from the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Olympics that will open in two weeks, following a staie of emergency issued on Thursday. The ban was announced by the International Olympic Committee and Japanese organizers, reducing the games to a made-for-TV event. Fans from abroad were banned months ago, and the new measures announced by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will mean venues around Tokyo -- indoor and outdoor -- will not have any fans at all. Just two weeks ago, organizers and the IOC allowed venues to be filled to 50% of capacity, but crowds not to exceed 10,000. The state of emergency has forced a late turnaround, which was always an option if cases rose. The main focus of the emergency is a request for bars, restaurants and karaoke parlors serving alcohol to close. A ban on serving alcohol is a key step to tone down Olympic-related festivities and keep people from drinking and partying. Tokyo residents are expected.

What should stay, what should go from the NHL's 2021 pandemic season

The end of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs in Tampa, Florida, was symbolic in its normalcy. It wasn't completely idyllic. There were a few masks worn during the championship ceremony. The media, friends and family were absent from the ice. Canadian health officials wanted strict COVID-19 protocols from NHL

Face masks were as prevalent as pucks throughout the NHL this past season, but documents show Canadian health officials wanted the league to take additional steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The league introduced a number of protocols in a bid to get back on the ice, including the daily testing of players and staff, rules around physical distancing and masks, and limiting the contact teammates could have away from the rink.Still, documents released to The Canadian Press under the Freedom of Information Act show health officials "strongly" recommended the league adopt additional measures before green-lighting its return. After receiving a draft of the NHL's return-to-play protocols, health officials from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Public Health Agency of Canada sent a joint letter to commissioner Gary Bettman on Dec. 23, 2020, urging the league to either add regular testing for the close contacts of players and staff to its protocols or use a "bubble model" similar to what the league created in Toronto and Edmonton to finish out the 2019-20 season.

NFL to fine unvaccinated players $14,650 for any violation of COVID-19 protocol

Unvaccinated NFL players will be subjected to a fine of $14,650 every time they violate COVID-19 procedures. A spotlight was put on the punishment after a report that Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians would fine a player "$14,000 on the spot every time he isn't wearing a mask or is breaking a protocol." The stipulations place a premium on wearing appropriate PPE and offer restrictions on the number of people and types of venues players may gather in for social or team-related purposes.

Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich tests positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated

Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated. Since NFL personnel returned to work last month, four players and 13 staffers have tested positive for COVID despite being vaccinated, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The league and the union are also at odds over the use of wristbands to identity unvaccinated players. The NFL is allowing clubs to make players wear bright-colored wristbands, which the NFLPA believes is unnecessary. Although Reich will be physically away from the Colts, he will still be involved in meetings through Zoom and will remain in contact with players and staff. The team is not going to name an interim coach. Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone will handle things in practice because he has more time, but he will get help from offensive coordinator Marcus Brady and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
