NBA: No pay if unvaccinated players can't play

Players who are forced to miss games due to the executive orders governing vaccination requirements in both New York and San Francisco will not be paid for any games they miss. "Any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games that he misses," Mike Bass, the NBA's executive vice president of communications, said in a statement Wednesday morning. The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association are finalizing an agreement over the health and safety protocols for this season, as ESPN reported Tuesday night when the league sent the protocols to teams.

Vaccination rate for NBA players rises to 95 percent, sources say

The NBA has reached a 95% vaccination threshold of its players, reflecting a steady rise since the opening of training camps this week, league sources told ESPN on Thursday. That uptick -- which includes players who've minimally received one vaccination shot, sources said -- comes as unvaccinated players prepare for losses of salary for games missed in the Bay Area and New York due to local governmental mandates. The protocols will require unvaccinated players to be under many of the same restrictions that the entire league played under for the vast majority of last season, before the COVID-19 vaccine was available. Vaccinated players, on the other hand, will have far fewer restrictions. For example, all fully vaccinated players, as well as Tier 1 personnel -- coaches and anyone else working regularly within 15 feet of players and referees, all of whom have already been mandated to get the vaccine -- will not have to undergo daily testing. Teams have also been instructed to have their seating arrangements prevent players that aren't fully vaccinated from sitting together. One thing that will be consistent for both vaccinated and unvaccinated players is the use of face masks, which the protocols say everyone will have to wear at all times in team facilities, when traveling with the team and where otherwise required under applicable federal, state, or local laws, regulations or orders.

Green Bay Packers place star WR Davante Adams on COVID-19 list

The Green Bay Packers could potentially be without Aaron Rodgers' most-important target for their biggest game of the season on Thursday at Arizona after receiver Davante Adams was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday. Adams tested positive for COVID-19, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Adams hasn't publicized his vaccination status, but he hasn't been forced to follow protocols for unvaccinated players, an indication he is vaccinated. If Adams is asymptomatic, he would need two negative PCR tests 24 hours apart in order to play Thursday against the unbeaten Cardinals, who activated pass-rusher Chandler Jones, who is second on the team with 5 sacks, and defensive lineman Zach Allen from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.

New York Giants limit facility access, cite rapid tests for 'unusually high number' of COVID-19 false positives

The New York Giants say irregularities with the rapid COVID-19 tests used by the NFL's lab seem to have resulted in false positive results for several players, potentially including running back Saquon Barkley. Coach Joe Judge said there were a "good amount" of coaches, players, staff members and even media that had seemingly irregular results over the past few days. Barkley, McKinney and starting left guard Matt Skura tested positive during rapid tests for COVID-19 earlier in the week, but all three players' PCR tests came back negative, setting off alarms that something could be amiss. Twelve of 13 positive results from Tuesday were false positives. The Giants enter the contest amid a turbulent week that began with a Monday night loss in Kansas City. Burns then tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, and the Giants had to retest the entire organization Wednesday and go remote for meetings on Thursday.
