Semantics. Tracy Hickman, the man who designed most of Dragonlance, was hired to make the first campaign setting. However, the creators of Grayhawk beat him to it. Dragonlance released shortly thereafter. However, Dragonlance got a larger following faster due to Hickman and Weis' writing their novels.

Negative. I don't know where you get your information, but that's totally wrong.

The World of Greyhawk Gazetteer was released in 1980 and was the first official campaign world for AD&D. It was re-released in 1984 in a box set. Greyhawk stemmed from Gary's private game campaign, though it really doesn't resemble it much.

Hickman didn't come to TSR until 1981 when he approached TSR about buying a couple of his modules (the Desert of Desolation series) and wound up with a job instead.
 
I was mislead by my source. I pulled my information from a blurb Hickman wrote in one of the Dragonlance books I've got.
 
Question: are you sure you didn't mean perhaps Dave Arneson's Blackmoor being the first campaign world? That thought just occured to me, and there's some small argument for it.
