Damar Hamlin collapses on field; Bills-Bengals temporarily suspended

Bills safety Damar Hamlin was taken off the field in an ambulance after receiving treatment for over 10 minutes, which resulted in the game between Buffalo and the Cincinnati Bengals being suspended until further notice Monday night. CPR was administered to Hamlin on the field for multiple minutes after he collapsed on the field following a play in the first quarter. He appeared to be receiving oxygen as he was placed in the ambulance and taken off the field some 16 minutes after he collapsed. The injury took place after Hamlin tackled wide receiver Tee Higgins and quickly got up afterward. He then abruptly collapsed with athletic trainers coming to help immediately. A stretcher was immediately brought to the field as athletic trainers protected his head. However, instead of resuming play, Bengals coach Zac Taylor walked over to Bills counterpart Sean McDermott and met with game officials present. The decision was then made to pause the game -- which the Bengals were leading 7-3 -- some 21 minutes after the injury.

Damar Hamlin visits Bills' locker room, salutes fans at Bengals game

At the two-minute warning in the first half of the Buffalo Bills' divisional round playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, an image popped up on the screens at Highmark Stadium as snow fell to the ground. At first, it was tough to see who, or what, exactly was being shown, but a lower third graphic popped up with the words: "Damar Hamlin, Bills safety." For a third straight game, the 3s on the 30-yard lines at Highmark were outlined in blue for Hamlin.

Bills' Damar Hamlin says he meant no disrespect with jacket

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin said Wednesday that he never intended to offend anyone by attending the Super Bowl wearing a jacket that critics deemed to feature an offensive depiction of Jesus. "After talking with my parents I understand how my coat could have offended some people," Hamlin wrote in a note posted on his Twitter account. "It was never my intentions to hurt or disrespect anyone, the coat is abstract art to me." Hamlin closed his two-post thread by saying he will continue to learn from the situation and adding: "My beliefs and Relationship with God is not tied to symbolic images." He created a stir on Super Bowl Sunday for wearing a Takashi Murakami "Travis Jesus" stadium jacket during pregame ceremonies and while sitting in NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's box during the game in Glendale, Arizona.

Hamlin cleared, 'incident' not the end of my story

Just over 3½ months after commotio cordis caused Damar Hamlin to collapse on a football field in Cincinnati, Hamlin sat in the Buffalo Bills' facility and officially announced his plans on making a comeback to the NFL after being fully cleared to return to playing football. For the 25-year-old safety, who has been cleared by multiple specialists, returning to the field, is something that he wants to do for himself. The steps ahead for Hamlin includes taking things one day at a time and the mental steps of gradually upgrading to playing football. The mental journey and rollercoaster of emotions is the "hardest hurdle," per Hamlin, but he noted how he has the right people in his corner, including those in the Bills' facility.

Damar Hamlin's CPR tour kicks off in Buffalo, distributes AEDs

With a line beginning to form, stretching across Highmark Stadium, Damar Hamlin and his father, Mario, took a beat to capture the moment. As Damar Hamlin held his phone in front of his face for the picture, Mario Hamlin got in the frame and the pair smiled brightly alongside an automated external defibrillator (AED) that Damar Hamlin was holding up. The group of people was made up of 50 Buffalo-area youth tackle football teams that had all come to receive an AED, which were distributed by Hamlin on Saturday at the Bills' Hands-Only CPR event, which is also the first stop of Hamlin's CPR Tour, the first program of his Chasing M's Foundation. Hamlin, 25, announced at the event that the CPR tour will feature stops in multiple other cities, including Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, Hamlin's hometown. Each stop will include CPR training and the distribution of AEDs to support youth sports and community groups. The importance of this education comes from nearly three out of four cardiac arrests outside of the hospital occurring in homes, per the American Heart Association.

Damar Hamlin dons helmet, practices in Bills' team drills

After two periods of work to start Tuesday's offseason training activity (OTA), the Buffalo Bills moved into stretching. Safety Damar Hamlin took his usual spot on the end of the defensive line, next to where pass-rusher Leonard Floyd, who signed his contract with the team Tuesday morning, warmed up. Hamlin, 25, announced he was physically cleared to resume playing in April. He has been at every session open to the media since but did not wear his helmet or participate in individual or team drills the way he did Tuesday. In April, Hamlin said the mental journey and roller coaster of emotions is the "hardest hurdle," but he had support in the Bills' facility.

Bills' Damar Hamlin to make first start since cardiac arrest

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that safety Damar Hamlin will start in Week 1. The fourth-year safety started 13 games in 2022 and played in five last season after suffering cardiac arrest on "Monday Night Football" in Cincinnati on Jan. 2, 2023, in a game against the Bengals. This will be his first start since then. Hamlin, 26, has received first-team opportunities throughout the offseason and training camp as the team dealt with injuries at the position, notably to free agent addition Mike Edwards (shoulder and then hamstring injuries) and to rookie second-round pick Cole Bishop (shoulder). McDermott said that Hamlin's consistency stood out in making the decision.
