I think the guy was real and he had been hypnotised. Let's face it he was a classic "Tim nice but dim" with the ability to draw £5K out of his bank in a matter of minutes. He looked a classic hypnotic candidate. The power of suggestion and an authority figure (which Derren is now) can get people to administer lethal electric shocks to strangers (Famous Milgram experiment clicky)- so I believe the £5K bank piece of the event.

I am really confused by it. It looks like they had a lot of "events" to run for the series and ran out of time on that last one. It is a shame because he is genuinely a great entertainer.

I think the ending went as planned. Though I was kind of expecting him to pop up on screen after the end credits and say something like "by the way, the loterry thing really was split screen."
