Direct download of Windows Vista Beta 2

When it's working, y'all are going to want to go through the whole signup process -- otherwise, you miss out on your activation key and you'll only be able to use Beta 2 for about 2 weeks, as opposed to almost a full year.
 
Okay, you still want to go through the official Microsoft Vista site to get your Activation Key, but if you don't feel like waiting for Microsoft's servers to unchoke and let you get the actual DVD image, here's an alternate link courtesy of BetaNews.com.

Now to use that alternate download link, you'll need a download manager -- otherwise, you're going to end up only downloading about 13Mb of the image before it thinks you've got the whole thing. Now if you're using IE 7 (and if you're not, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!) you can get the Free Download Manager Add-On from here.
 
I'm probably going to wait for a more stable release anyway. I'm wating for the beta that is actually worthy of being a change over from XP. At the moment the compatibility and response time of XP is way superior to Vista Beta 2.

I think it's going to be after summer before a changeover version actually becomes viable.
 
The MOST important thing you can do right now, though, even if you plan to wait for a future build to go to CTP, is to get yourself an activation key. And I can tell you this from experience with getting previous builds "that other way" -- a key that worked on 5342 worked on 5384. Which means that if you get a VALID key for 5384, chances are good it'll work with 5408 (or whatever RC1/RC2/etc is going to be called.)
 
I have indeed read Paul's stuff, and he seems to be fair handy with a keyboard. Of course, I wouldn't presume to judge his ability, but I've had a slightly different experience than he has, and I guess I'm not as cynical. Hard to believe.
 
So you don't need to boot from the installation disc to upgrade? How convenient.

I'll be all set now, once the servers stop being swamped...

So, what's the secret to being able to upgrade by mounting it w/ Alcohol 120%?

The setup.exe is "not a valid Win32 application," and I canna find anything else.

This is the place to get it, apparently. I'm getting a MB/s download speed.
 
After TQ mentioned VMWare, I thought about vista again...

Installing on a virtual machine now, I'll see what's what in a few.

One question, how does one up the display options in one's virtual machine?
 
Never mind, sorted.

Posting this from IE7... looks pretty cool. Everything about vista so far reminds me of other operating systems... ubuntu, osx, etc.

Fun, tho!
