Do hunger strikes really work?

It's always sounded like an exceptionally stupid protest method.

Gets some props for being non-violent, but the last thing it elicits from me is guilt or sympathy or a desire to get politicians or whomever to do whatever the hunger-strikers want.

Although considering everyone knows you won't be allowed to die, it's kinda BS.
