Doctor Strange

I liked it. There were some really stunning and inventive visuals. Cumberbatch was very good as Stange. I thought Rachel McAdams had good chemistry with him and she did good with what she had to do (I thought she'd appear again at the end though.) All the other sorcerers were good characters and Wong got the biggest laughs. I would have liked to have seen more of Mads Mikkelsen but I thought he did a great job and at least he got a couple of scenes where he had conversations with people (unlike say Christopher Eccleston or Lee Pace.) Having the final action scene take place while time was reversing was pretty great. I loved that Strange defeated Dormammu by basically threatening to annoy him for all of inifinity. Lots of easter egg references (which I can't remember right now.) Thor scene was funny and I'm guessing it was a scene taken from the next Thor rather than being filmed for this.

On the downside it felt a bit rushed in the second half as he kept picking up new abilities and objects: the sling ring, the Eye of Agamotto, the cloak (but the cloak was cool, don't get me wrong!) Could have used a scene at the end of him reflecting on all the crazy shit that's just happened over a pretty short time period.
 
Hey I saw it today too!

Pretty much echo everything that Wacky said - I really liked the visuals (it's easily the most visually interesting Marvel film since, like, Thor? Guardians maybe?). Cumberbatch was great although it took a while to warm to his American accent, but when he goes full flying-cloak Doctor Strange it was great, he's a really good fit in the role. I really hope they manage to keep him coming back (I guess he's coming back for Thor at least!).

Mads was good and at least got some scenes where he could act, but I thought it was a shame that he basically got forgotten as soon as Dormammu appeared.

The middle of the film did seem a bit strangely (NO PUN INTENDED) paced - Strange goes from not believing in magic to learning how to use the super secret top level magic spells in about ten minutes. All the while it's mixed in with some clunky exposition; there's about three scenes where they talk about Kaecilius stealing the pages just to make sure that the audience really knew what was going on.

I'm not sure why Rachel McAdams was even there because she could have been cut out of the film entirely.

BUT I LIKED IT A LOT OKAY.
 
I liked that they just casually mentioned that they Eye of Agamotto is an infinity stone without stopping to explain what infinity stones are again.

I never knew that. Is that canon from the comics or made up for the movie?

(Like Ego the Planet being Star-Lords Dad?)
 
They do mention that he has a photographic memory, so he learns spells almost immediately.
 
None of the infinity stones in the movies are infinity stones in the comics. Theyre completely different things. Thanos' raging boner to possess them was the same in both though. Drax, and Gomora each had a stone on their foreheads for years as part of the infinity watch. I don't think any of the comic stones share any connection to the movie stones anyway. Could be wrong about a couple of them. I know for a fact Vision doesn't possess one in the comics, and the cosmic cube is just the cosmic cube In the comics. Actually, There's been like a hundred of them including a character that was birthed from a cosmic cube. The only similarity between movie, and comic is the Red Skull's obsession, and lack of success with using the cosmic cube. It's like all he does. Its his whole shtick basically.
 
Never really got into his comics, but Marvel/Disney makes some pretty movies and I like supporting the local independent theater, so when it finally got there I caught it. Besides, they're getting ready to really get into the Infinity War arc and I heard this was an important movie in that regard.

Really glad I did. Very well structured story. The visuals were a trifle over-the-top, but I'm told that was a hallmark of the old comics. Still, I'm glad I'm not an epileptic.

Anyway, it had a nice message about staying humble even when you're the best at something and being open to something that wasn't your plan. There was a nice message about breaking the rules when it is necessary, but balanced by being prepared to live with the consequences. Finally, there was a message about not giving up when it matters but being able to give yourself *over* to something bigger than yourself--and that you can never be as ready as you want to be, but you are usually as ready as you need to be. Finally, they did a good job of setting up a future villain that is not MWUAHAHAHAHA! EEEEEVIL--he's like Khan or Heisenberg/Walter White, where he thinks *he's* the good guy (at least that's the way the post credits teaser looked.

Oh, and Strange's cape was funny. You had to be there.

Oh, and if you really, really have to pee, if you can hold it until the mid credits teaser, there's plenty of time to pee and get back before the end credits teaser. Even an Austin Powers-worthy, holding it for 90 minutes pee.

I'll do a spoilery breakdown if anyone wants it, but all in all, a really good time. Now I need to hunt down a copy of "Ant Man" because that's the only MCU I've missed and if the C list heroes can be this engaging, I may need to give that one a shot too.
 
I merged the threads because it's the only action that brings pleasure to my life.

Ant-Man is just as good so yeah watch it.

Oh, and visually the film steals from "Inception" and visually and thematically from "The Matrix." But those are both good films and "Dr. Strange" does a good job of stealing from them, so it's all good.
