Doctor Who: Series 4

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
I'm most of the way through Series 4, just finished the 2-part "Intergalactic Library" story, with 4 episodes left. Havnae watch the Christmas Special, I know it comes before this series, but I'll d/l and watch it before the Easter Special airs (airdate, anyone???).

Overall, I give Series 4 a B. Just for comparison purposes, Series 2 was a solid A, Series 3 was an A+.

I'm not a big fan of Donna Noble as The Doctor's companion. I liked Rose Tyler better, and Martha Jones the best. It just seems like Donna doesn't add much, except her "hey, I was a super-temp so I can make mundane connexions like no one at Atmos has taken a sick day" routine. Meh.

the stories are ok, but pretty easy to figure out in about 15 minutes. Nothing exceptional so far, with the exception of the DELICIOUS Georgia Moffett as Jenny. Also like Alex Kingston, as Dr. River Song. Is she The Doctor's wife at some point? She knows his real name (which, according to Wikipedia, has never been revealed), and in the episode "The Doctor's Daughter", The Doctor reveals that he's been a father. Intriguing!! But, as The Doctor himself warns, "NO Spoilers!"

Pretty much the only thing that elevates this series from a C+ to a B is David Tennant. As much as I liked Eccleston, and was bummed that he left, I'm absolutely thrilled at Tennant's performance. It's no wonder he recently unseated Tom Baker as "favourite Doctor". He's perfect in the role.

Can't wait to see the last 4. I accidentally found out that Davros makes an appearance. Without giving away any spoilers, can anyone tell me if the last 4 eps are good?

Can't wait to see the Easter Special, with the Bionic Woman as the Doctor's Companion!

Now, who the hell is Astrid Peth??

The last eps are good, solid. But, I think series 4 peaks with the one you just watched, when the doctor said "I'm the Doctor, you're in the largest library in the universe; look me up."

No spoilers, but get ready to FANWANK.

The last episodes start good but end with the most lazy writing I have ever seen.

I liked the Pompeii episode this year, even though it was another one of those ones where a famous historical event/character was influenced by aliens.

The finale was indeed pretty lame, although, as ever with Who, there were some nifty ideas mixed in.
I liked the moving of Earth and the towing of it back, the whole group at the TARDIS controls and the nukes that would blow up the world

MUST. NOT. CLICKTOSHOW.

I liked the part where Rose smothers the Doctor between her breasts and he regenerates into David Morrisey.

MUST. NOT. CLICKTOSHOW.

Don't. Just come back to this thread when you've seen the finale and see whether you liked or hated those things. I think most people thought they were lame, but I reckon they would've been a lot cooler if the context had been different. The surrounding lameness of the ending made everything else seem pretty lame by osmosis. Or something.

I liked it when
taunting BDM
or when it turned out that
still taunting BDM
but it was pretty lame that after all was said and done
I love taunting BDM

Watched "Midnight" last night. Apart from the bit where Rose Tyler appears on the vid screen for a second (did you all catch her on the monitors in the "library" episode??), it was pretty sub-standard. Reminds me of the Enterprise episode where Trip and whashisface were stuck in the escape pod. Obviously an homage to Hitchcock's "Lifeboat", and most likely a way to save some budget dollars for the last 3 episodes.

I probably won't get to see the last 3 eps until the weekend, what with Lost being on tonight, then Earl/Kath&Kim/Office/30 Rock to watch on Thursday.

The trouble I had with Midnight was that the nature of the show meant it had to be a character piece.

The only problem with that if that RTD can't write characters, only two-dimentional stereotypes. Hence "Emo kid" (who turned into Merlin), "old Professor", "annoying parents", "girl who just broke up".

And the worst part of it is that these are two-dementional stereotypes of present day people, and the show is set in the far future.

Yeah, I agree. To some extent, you need to make the characters relatable to us in the present. And, one could argue that Davies is making the argument that fundamental human traits will never be completely purged from us. However, it would be nice to see humans acting in a way that's "non-human" or "evolved".

YOU SHOULD WATCH MERLIN NEXT.

Merlin was the only good thing about that crappy episode. The talking at the same time thing was an interesting idea, but went on for way too long.

What's Merlin?

BBC series about a young Merlin (played by the goh boy from Midnight), aimed at the same audience as Doctor Who. The writing's a bit formulaic and lazy at times, but the cast is good and it's pretty entertaining most of the time.

The one with Sam Neill?

No, this is a new version that changes the story a bit. Merlin and Arthur are about the same age as eachother and Gwenevere (or Gwen) is a black hand maiden (much to some racialists' chagrin). Also there's a dragon played by John Hurt who gives shit advice every week.

Glad I've missed it then.
