Duke Blue Devils basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to retire after season; Jon Scheyer named successor

Former players, celebrities fill Cameron Indoor Stadium for Mike Krzyzewski's final home game as Duke men's basketball coach

Nearly 100 former players, including Duke legends Grant Hill, Jason Williams, Shane Battier and Christian Laettner, lined the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium to welcome coach Mike Krzyzewski for the final time Saturday, as the Blue Devils wrapped their regular season and the legendary coach's career on his home court -- against rival North Carolina. Fans roared as comedian Jerry Seinfeld and NBA commissioner Adam Silver, sitting next to each other, waved on the video board. Sitcom stars Ken Jeong and Retta sat courtside along the baseline. Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse, former Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki and Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens were all in attendance, too.

Rival UNC upsets No. 4 Duke in Coach K's Cameron farewell

North Carolina spoiled the emotional home finale of retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, beating fourth-ranked rival Duke 94-81 on Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The day that was all about the coach who has 1,196 career victories and five NCAA championships abruptly turned into a season-defining performance for the Tar Heels, who played fearlessly in an extra rowdy arena and shot 59% after halftime. Armando Bacot scored 23 points to lead the Tar Heels (23-8, 15-5). Freshman Paolo Banchero scored 23 points for the Blue Devils (26-5, 16-4), who shot just 42%. Associate head coach Jon Scheyer, who is designated as Krzyzewski’s successor next season, took a moment to pat his mentor on the right shin before the opening tip.

Krzyzewski K-O'd: North Carolina takes out coach, Duke 81-77

For the 48th time over 47 years of unparalleled coaching, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski took the slow walk to midcourt and shook the hand of the North Carolina coach who beat him. After that, he found his wife, Mickie, and they made the slow, sad walk, hand-in-hand, off the Superdome floor. Krzyzewski's remarkable career came to gut-wrenching close after Caleb Live made a key 3-pointer and three late free throws to lift the Tar Heels to their thrill-a-minute victory. This was the 258th, most consequential and maybe, just maybe, the very best meeting between these teams, whose arenas are separated by a scant 11 miles down on Tobacco Road. The eighth-seeded Tar Heels (29-9), of all teams, pinned the 368th and final loss on Krzyzewski. He finished with 1202 wins. His lifetime record against North Carolina fell to 50-48. Instead of Krzyzewski going for his sixth title, on Monday, Carolina will try to win its seventh. North Carolina is back on the verge again, playing in its third final since 2016 and looking for its second title since 2017 Win or lose, though, 2022 will always be remembered as the year North Carolina sent Coach K packing for good.

Duke Blue Devils basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to retire after season; Jon Scheyer named successor

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, who is the winningest coach in Division I men's basketball history and has led the Blue Devils to five national championships in his 41 seasons, will retire after the 2021-22 season, the university announced Wednesday. Associate head coach Jon Scheyer, who played for Krzyzewski from 2006-10, has been named Krzyzewski's successor. He will spend the 2021-22 season as coach-in-waiting and will take over after that. Duke talked to outside candidates about replacing the 74-year-old Krzyzewski, including Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Scheyer, who was the lead recruiter of NBA star Jayson Tatum and Class of 2021 No. 3 prospect Paolo Banchero, was Duke's choice to replace Krzyzewski, however. Krzyzewski, a Naismith Hall of Fame coach who has 1,097 career wins at Duke, has taken the Blue Devils to the Final Four on 12 occasions. He has won 12 regular-season ACC championships and 15 conference tournament titles while producing 28 NBA lottery picks and 41 first-round selections over the years. Having five national titles puts him second only to former UCLA coach John Wooden, who won 10. Hired at Duke in March 1980, "Coach K'' won national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010 and 2015, while setting the men's career coaching victories record in November 2011.
Along the way, he also took over the U.S. men's national team -- with NBA All-Star rosters featuring names such as the late Kobe Bryant and LeBron James and led it to Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Duke Blue Devils men's basketball coach Jon Scheyer says Mike Krzyzewski truly retired, giving him 'space'

As Duke men's basketball players prepared for a recent practice, one man's absence was notable. Mike Krzyzewski was not on the sideline. Despite still holding an office on campus, Krzyzewski has not been present since his retirement as Jon Scheyer, his former assistant and a former star player who helped the team win a national title in 2010, prepares to launch a new chapter for the program. Krzyzewski has been spotted at a few places in the area since he retired after his team's run to the Final Four in April: a women's volleyball game and on his favorite walking path near campus -- but not at Duke's practice facility or even his office in the building.
