Dune Genesis

I finished Heretics. Definitely the weakest of the books so far. I liked the characters and a lot of the concepts (the reveal of what the Axlotl tanks really are!) but the plot was hard to follow. It seemed every forty pages or so a character would say something like "ah, now I realise the true designs of Jimmy McNose! And I will modify them slightly!" but the reader wasn't let in on what the true designs of Jimmy McNose were or how they were modified...or maybe we were supposed to know and I just missed it. I don't know. And Duncan and Sheeana never even met! I'm reading something else now then I'll read Chapterhouse.

Oh yeah, I'll read that essay.

Heretics and Chapterhouse are my least favorite. There are some who think they are the best but, to me, they're just not as good. Miles Teg makes them worth reading, and I imagine FH had plans to make his character even more interesting but he died and KJA and BH have raped Miles and all the other interesting characters.

Didn't Miles die at the end of Heretics? Or was that another thing I misunderstood.

The chapter where he was being tortured and developed double sight or whatever it was called was my favourite part.

Ooh.. yeah he died. Remember what Odrade did right before she left him, though? She scratched his neck!

I loved the super speed part too, one of the best parts. I think the confusing thing about Heretics is that people from the Scattering are introduced. It's hard to know who's who, and why they are doing some of the shit they do.

I liked the last two, although GEoD remains my favorite. I know a lot of people have a hard time with the big leaps in time, but that never really bothered me. Make no mistake, though, the last two are definitely the most different, but seeing Herbert's view of the post Famine/Scattering times is pretty cool. As always, I feel there's more to these laying below the surface, no matter how deep I scratch.

Thanks for posting the link to the article. I've read that a few times in the past and it always helps to get me centered on what FH was going for as opposed to the multitude of fan theories, etc.

WITH WHOM DO YOU ALY? is my favorite line. :)
