It probably would've made more sense than trying to tie it into our own universe, because this way we have to accept that they have the same gods, language and tech as us through "the cycle" or "god". Both of which are a bit hard to swallow, although that kind of stuff is pretty common in animé with Gaia and all.
Still, I like the question posed and the end about our technology advancing faster than our societies do, even if that was the whole theme of the series anyway. It was worth bringing home at the very end.
Everyone who complained that we never saw Earth's continents and it must be a red herring was proved right in the end. Maybe that thing that looked like Brooklyn Bridge was another example of the cycle of remarkably similar everything.
ONE THING THOUGH when they were on Kobol and Starbuck had the arrow there was a star map or something showing THE CYLON EARTH but the constellations matched OUR EARTH or something!?
When the 13th Tribe got to Earth they made constallations of the other 12 tribes in the sky. The sky we saw in the Tomb of Apollo wasn't an exact replica of our sky (AFAIK you can't see all the constallations in a nice row like they did, and there isn't a GIANT NEBULA in our sky).
It's not that big of a stretch to think that the people of the fleet then made their own versions of the constallations on our Earth.
