Facebook...

I got into Social Media in early 2010-ish. I'd just returned to Portland after 2 years working in Hawai'i and was working on rebuilding my professional network. At the time all the wonks and talking heads were horny for social media. You HAD to have a Facebook page. You HAD to have LinkedIn. So I got them. And in those days Facebook was good for staying in touch with friends and relatives in other parts of the country and seeing what they were up to. It was good for finding out about things happening locally. There was the Farmville online games fad. I still keep Facebook because I have relatives that I can reach through it but the actual feed is useless garbage at this point. LinkedIn? It got increasingly garbage but that's another story. A few years ago my account got hacked and it was impossible to get in touch with anyone to recover it. I have no idea why the account was stolen because the hacker proceeded to change my name, location, and occupation. A few times I've looked for someone on Google and came up with a LinkedIn profile that I wouldn't have minded looking at, but you can't without joining and I just don't give a shit. Twitter is for kinky porn. But again, that's another story.

For as much as I rag on Facebook, X makes it look like...I dunno, a paragon. True, I don't particularly do anything to cultivate my profile and feed--I mainly use it to directly click on a half dozen or so profiles--but dag, when I do it's 95% doomscroll clickbait garbage. AI and/or staged slop designed to make you sit there like an idiot and waste your time on garbage. I don't know that YouTube is much better these days either. I used to go there to watch clips. Sometimes I'd get suckered into watching something that was suggested--sometimes even forgetting why I came there in the first place, but lately the suggestions there have been crap too. It's all 20 minute videos of Europeans eating Texas BBQ.

YouTube has an algorithm like Facebook and TikTok. Watch videos on something other than Texas BBQ, and you will see your suggestions improve.
