Favorite composers

What are your favorite composers? Mine are, in this order:

1. George Gershwin
2. Aaron Copland
3. Sergei Rachmaninoff

I tend to have a preference for the more modern composers.

Mahler. Now that's an interesting choice. He had a very unique sound. Had I gone for top 5 he would have been #4. What's your opinion of Jean Sibelius?

I love Sibelius.

Dvorak, Smetana, Sibelius, in some kind of order.

For classical stuff (although I really do hate that term to describe anything before around the 1930's) then I'd have to go with Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky and Mahler.

For more modern composters then Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Giacchino, Delia Derbyshire (a really underrated 1960's electronic composer, and cute as all hell as well), Jeremy Soule does excellent stuff with his sampled orchestra and Philip Glass.

I had the impression that composer-type people were bound by a blood oath to hate Philip Glass.

No, not really.

The stuff he does sounds very simple (because it's, y'know, minimalism) but it takes skill to make something as complex as his peices sound as simple as they do.

He's probably not the best minimalist composer, sure, but is he the most famous and I love his solo piano work.
