First gays, now drugs...

A couple of weeks ago, the Obama-Biden transition team's website solicited policy questions from the public. Over two days, the site "processed over 600,000 votes from more than 10,000 people on more than 7,300 questions," and this was the top question:

Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion dollar industry right here in the U.S.?

Obama's terse answer:

President-elect Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana.

Read the rest at Reason.

So just what good can we expect to come from Obama? Aren't Democrats supposed to be the ones that deliver better results on "social" stuff? I'm not talking about nationalised health care or other bullshit infringements on personal liberty but rather on INCREASING personal freedom.

Not very promising.

Although it would be really cool if, from now on he actually started referring to himself in the third person: "President-elect Obama want's to see the future First Lady dressed up like a cheerleader. President-elect Obama is going to tap that ass."

Too hard to regulate. Marijuana can be grown in the home. Tobacco isn't a home-grown kinda drug. Neither is alcohol. With weed, all you need is a planter, some dirt, a seed, and some water.

Did anyone really expect the US to federally decriminalize marijuana at any foreseeable point?

It's a stupid issue to bitch about.

Decriminalization =/= legalization, btw.

It's already been decriminalized in a few states. Massachusetts, for one.

Yeah, but even in Mass, the DEA or any federal bureau can still fuck your shit up, 'cause possession can still carry a federal offense.

Anyone from either side of the aisle who thought Obama was going to bring radical change is a moron.

During his first term, look for executive decisions that back down a little bit on pot. No more of these 'Marijuana is the worst drug in the country' bullshit. No more prosecuting farmers hired by states to grow medical marijuana for the state. Look for some shifting of funds away from Pot to meth, crack, heroin etc.

Maybe, maybe if by second term Iraq, the economy, healthcare, whatever new big issue pops up, has been taken care of then we might see some actual legislation put forward on marijuana. However it won't be anything radical, at most formally pulling the Feds out of intrastate pot prosecutions.

Alcohol can be homegrown if you do it right.

Yeah, but if you do it wrong, you'll poison yourself and possibly go blind.

If you fuck up growing pot, you have a dead plant. Big deal.

Well, no "Change!" on this one.

That's very narrowminded. It isn't all or nothing. Bush cocked up the 'War on Drugs' so much that there is a long list of changes (see my post upthread) for the better that can be made without legalization.

Call it narrowminded, but I call it observant. Obama won't have any power that isn't first vetted by the Pelosi/Reid tag team - and whatever gets through will have negligible or negative effects.

Dude, what the fuck. Seriously, read my post upthread. I lay out executive decisions that Obama has available. I specifically posted positive changes that Obama can make without Congress.

I'll admit it - he's looking a lot better than I thought he was going to be. At least on economic issues. On the social stuff where one might have hoped for good stuff instead of not-too-bad stuff...well, not so much.

I don't get this. Legalizing marijuana wouldn't really cost that much (actually, through tax revenue and reduced costs for the war on drugs it would probably be "profitable"). I get that it might cost him some political capital or whatever but what the fuck? Come on, the guy's got shitloads of congressmen and senators on his side, how bad can it be?

On the other hand, I don't really think you guys are gonna get anywhere over the next twenty years. My short stay in North America was quite the eye opener in terms of just how fucked up your relationship with alcohol still is (not to speak of just how fucking expensive cigarettes are). All this last call bullshit, all this "liquor only sold at government-run stores" (that's a Canadian thing, I know) - you have a loooong way to go with those two substances. And even we guys can't seem to get our shit together. Switzerland just rejected marijuana decriminalization with about a 65% majority.
Am I hopeful that there'll come a brighter day? Sure but it just isn't looking too good right now...
