I kinda disagree with the sentiment of this thread -- you all had your hopes set way too high.
The X-Men comics never made any REAL sense, the "this is about racism" thing was always more in the background and not totally developed as I recall, it was about fighting and shit blowing up and the end of the world and crazy villians who were giant magnets and shit.
This movie was good, definitely better than the first X-Men movie, which drags like a dead cat in parts. X2 was better for the reasons you cite, but I slightly prefer X3 to it because the action sequences are better WHICH IS WHY I WATCH THESE MOVIES. Also Juggernaut was fucking kickass. Also Beast fucking ruled. Also Pheonix was awesomely animated and really seemed all-powerful. Also Professor X died... Lots of good stuff IMO.
You just have to take it for what it is. An action flick. I could never tell exactly why they were dashing off to these random places to fight people they weren't really enemies of... But honestly too much has been made of the deeper meaning of the X-Men.
Though I do agree that trashing the Wolfie / Paquin relationship sucked.
Ratner fucked that movie up. What pained me even more, was Kevin Smith praised it up to the hilt, saying it had more in spirit with an X-Men flick than X-Men 2. Did it fuck!
Then again, Smith also said Superman Returns sucked, because Superman was boring, whiney & emo, there was no action, and Lois should have asked Superman why he raped her because she didn't know the kid was his.
