The Question

Eternal
I've just completed my first feature-film script. Now I know for certain and for myself why people do this. It ain't the paycheck, although I'm hoping that'll be enough to let me do this some more.

No, it's the high. It's the unbelievable rush you get from writing a story that just whomps all over everything you've watched in a theater and everything you've written, yourself, up to this point.

I mean holy shit, I just finished a first-pass edit on this one and I already want to do the next one. I can't wait to sit down with Power Structure and plot out the next script, then dive in with Final Draft and get it written.

I mean, sincerely... wow.

I know what you mean, TQ. I wrote a horror novel that beat the shit out of the several "horror" novels I read available on the market - no spelling errors, no mis-use of grammatical structure, more thrills, more suspense, a cleaner story, a logical conclusion though unexpected, and a satisfying amount of death.

It's almost like having a child.

Pff. The hell you can't. I am the Lord God of procrastination, and if I can break the habit, you can, too! Okay, realistically maybe you can't, but for fuck's sake, quit telling yourself that. :(

I got to know TQ, How did you find the will to keep writing?

I ask because I've been writing something for about 2 years now, a sort of 2 part book. I'll write a part then wont touch it for almost 6 months, then start on it again. My major problem isn't Ideas, I have notebooks full of them. It's finding the will to actully sit down and either type it or write it all out.

Pure stubbornness. I decided I was going to get it done, and saw everything that fell into the category of "not getting it done" as an attack on that decision. I argued it to completion. :D

Congratulations!!!! :bigass: Hopefully you'll have enough funds soon to begin building your very own, terribly original, cool ass, house!

I don't know how one even begins to write let alone start and stop or finish anything. I have no original story ideas floating around in my head and what is in there is more along the lines of a true crime book. Tracking murders along Route 66 and I don't have the faintest clue where to start with that. Plus writing sucks, I'm all about the research.

^^You need to 'acquire' yourself a copy of Microsoft OneNote (for the research collection/organization stuff) and a copy of Power Structure (for plotting the story and/or sequence of chapters.) Both are out there just ripe for the 'acquisition.'

As far as how to proceed with it; well, we all have our own way we like to work, but I would suggest the most logical way would be chronologically by crime, with the alternative of plotting out a 'route' along Route 66 and using the "voice" of a tour guide taking the audience along for a 'rolling tour' of that road's dark side.

Where were you educated in script/creative writing?

You just make it sound so cool...You write it so I can read it. ;)

Reaching critical mass with my desire to start up my own little magnum opus, so I'm gonna start looking for these, along with Final Draft. Any tips for 'acquisition'?

I've recently joined the finished screenplay club myself. Not yet having gone the 'acquisition' route, I've been using an app called Celtx. It'll be interesting how much Hollywood changes the script if they take a liking to it.
