Growing trend of alco old ladies in American dramas

I was watching Desperate Housewives today when Orson's drunken mother drank a bottle of wine and started running her mouth about the bloke's affair. I thought to myself, "this seems familiar". Not the part where Bree's hubby has a dark and shady past, but the part where a main character's mother is an alcoholic 60 year old widow/divorcee.

The same is true of Daniel's mum in Ugly Betty and Will's mum in Will & Grace. Does America have a problem with menopausal alcoholics that it's determined to combat through tv?
