Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I finally saw it today, SPOILERS BELOW but I suspect anyone who cares has seen it by now...

It was good. The second half was a lot better than the first half, so that's good in a way because it finishes strong. What it did very well was the emotional scenes. Yondu's death was very sad and Michael Rooker did a great job throughout giving the character depth. The funeral with the Cat Stevens song and Sylvester Stallone and everyone, all good stuff. Gamora and Nebula hugging? Beautiful. All their scenes together were so good that I'd love to see a spin-off where they go off together to save other girls from Thanos. Drax talking about his wife and child, Rocket crying...like I said all the emotional stuff realy worked.

Ego was a good villain. I mean, he did just end up having another "end all life in the galaxy" plan but it was a much better excuted plan than the one in Thor: The Dark World. His planet looked cool (love the shot of his face on it.) Mantis was a fun cute new character. I liked the gold people and their video game style drone ships ("you suck, Zylak!") A lot of the humour was very good. Drax got most of the funniest lines and I always enjoy seeing Dave Bautista do so well.

But that brings me to the negatives: some of the humour didn't really work as well as the first? It all seemed, epsecially in the first hour, dialed up to eleven. At one point Nebula said "all you do is shout at each other" and I was thinking "yeah, I wish they'd stop that" because there was a bit too much of it, especially from Rocket. Not every joke has to be shouted! When Peter and Rocket were aruging at the beginning it just made them both seem like assholes rather than being endearing. And there was one bit there Nebula told her really tragic backstory about her abusive father than they instantly undercut it with humour. It would have been a lot better without the undercutting it with humour part. Some of the jokes seemed to go on too long and then after a character (Drax or Rocket) would laugh for ages just so you knew what the jokes was. While Ego was a good villain I'm not sure why they took so long to reveal his evil ways. I mean, no one was going to believe that someone angry that her batteries were stolen was the main villain of the movie.

I liked the end credits and how Jeff Goldblum randomly appeared dancing in a bubble because who's going to stop him.

So yeah, it's definitely a very good fun Marvel movie but I wouldn't put it in my top five vey good fun Marvel movies just because there was stuff that didn't work for me.
 
I liked it overall but it was a bit more inconsistent than the first one. I think the biggest problem this film has is that it lives very much in the shadow of the first one and where were a lot of moments that only seemed to exist because it was just repeating something that was popular in the first one (DANCING GROOT I'M LOOKING AT YOU) and as such felt a bit forced.

I also feel that splitting the group up was a mistake because one of the best parts about the first film was the dynamic between the whole group so it was a shame to lose that.

BUT I'm glad this film was better with some of the characters ESPECIALLY GAMORA who I never really liked and it wasn't until seeing this film that I realised why. She's supposed to have had a past as a daughter of Thanos, and would have done a lot of bad things - worse things than Nebula, even. But at no point during the first film is it ever acknowledged that Gamora ever was a really horrible person in the past and probably did some really terrible things but instead she just becomes the love interest / mum of the group because that's what the story wants her to be. What made it even worse was that everyone treated Nebula like she was a terrible person (I mean, she was) while ignoring that Gamora was probably worse.

BUT at least in this film there was some acknowledgement that Gamora was a pretty shitty person in the past and she actually had to account for things she did in the past and it gave Nebula more screen time AND THAT'S GOOD. She does maybe spend too much time being the mum of the group (AS FEMALE CHARACTERS IN MARVEL FILMS ARE OFTEN REDUCED TO) as she rolls her eyes as all the boys do the crazy hijinks.

But yeah most of it was pretty good and I liked Ego as a villain but we needed more shots of the planet with the face.
 
Finally saw it a week ago. Almost missed it because I was busy moving. Agree with the general tone here. I'd have to pop over to IMDB or something to confirm, but I suspect the run time was a lot longer than #1. The plot seemed a lot more complex and moved a lot slower than #1. Kind of the problem with not being able to introduce your villain right off the bat. I realize, in a movie with 2 CGI main characters, you kind of need CGI, but by the end I was like, "what do set builders do these days?"

All that said, I did cry like a little bitch at the ending. Happy kind of tears, but definitely tears.
 
I watched a terrible bootlegged clip of the funeral on YouTube today. Even as chopped up as it was and of poor quality, it still got me. Wonderfully crafted. It trumps Victor Lazlo, singing down the Nazis, as the clip that makes me tear up.
