Headvoid comments on the Christmas TV adverts 2013

The Sainsbury's one has been taken down due to copyright (are they worried they'd have to pay Google for the views?), so here's a mirror.

I didn't realise we had so many shops left until this thread.

The Sainsbury's one was good and of course had a nice ending, but 3 minutes was a little long to hold my attention as it didn't feel like it could be building up to anything.

I like the Debenham's one but haven't a clue what the story is. To be honest, I'm not sure I would have really picked up that there was a story if I saw it on tv. I'd think "oh look, they're showing all their designers". The song by Foxes is one of my faves at the moment, though they've cut it to ribbons to fit their editing here. That probably doesn't do much to help the pacing.

I liked the Boots one. Not amazingly original, but it's got all the right ingredients. Fake snow, daft wooly hats, altruism.

I'm a big fan of both 60's northern soul and pictures of trains in the snow -- does that mean that TJ Maxx is finally narrowing in on my demographic?

I hope not, for their sake, because I have literally no money to spare.

I have specifically asked trend wank watch for their most recent update. I nearly pissed myself with laughter as I realised the only reason I ordered the update was to snigger about it on the Internet with you lot!

I will provide a summary and Iceland tomorrow!

Just saw a new Tesco ad that seems to have scrapped the Instagram thing and instead says "hey, Asians can celebrate Capitalistmas too!"

Ok, Conscious that this is me talking "shop" but there appears to be continued interest in this.

These are genuine trends that people are paid money to spot:
"Flawsome" - The idea that a brand can admit how shit they are and still appear liked by consumers.
This has recently been updated to be: "honest flexibiity"

"Upgradia" - we are getting used to digital (led by mobile) upgrades, soon we will demand upgrades on existing, physical products we won - TV's going smart, cars etc.

"Guilt Free Consumption" - Almost all of these trends are about laziness and the human condition. This is that we are all not actually evil. Even Goldman Sachs believe they are "creating wealth" rather than killing the planet and raping the poor. Guilt Free Consumption is that we want you (the brand) to have done nice things on our behalf so we can feel good about buying your tat. This has morphed from an old trend about "Pre-Packaged Green" - the classic example being the toilet paper that plants more trees than it cuts down.

I'm boring myself now, so will stop.

I just read my post back and have cut off one of my toes as punishment.

Nathan Barley needs to be repeated more. It's excellent.

I wish one of the big stores had done an advert with Nigella Lawson wish they'd now have to frantically edit. "That snow looks like cocaine!"

This is my favorite Christmas commercial so far this year. IT'S VERY SWEET.

So...I guess the mom and dad are bitter bastards who never assumed in a million years that the kid meant her grandpa. Maybe he wrote them out of his will and left it all to the kid.

GENTILES! THEY'RE SO FUNNY!
