Heroes spinoff could be on the cards

Is this real life?

"In an effort to boost its lagging ratings, NBC will give viewers a heavy dose of science fiction in the fall, including a spinoff of "Heroes," its one new hit this season.

The network will stretch the "Heroes" franchise to 30 episodes with six installments of "Heroes: Origins," which will introduce new characters each week and will not necessarily involve the current cast of the show. (Viewers will get to vote on which of the super-powered newcomers gets to join the regular series.)"

Yeah, NBC's rating woes have been making headlines at the moment. They are nurturing Heroes like a newborn baby since it is pretty much their only ratings winner at the moment and a bonifide out-the-box hit.

I'm not sure about this move though... I hope they don't' fuck it up. On one hand more Heroes sounds like an excellent deal. But if this spin off has substandard quality and ludicrous plots that end up bleeding into the main show then it could be a disaster.

Also, Heroes is only just finishing up its first season. Let it breath on its own for a while I say.

That could be a possiblity as well, but certainly it's a better bet than the aforementioned "reality" shows...

Unfortunately, since returning from the long hiatus, Heroes has been getting its ass kicked by a combo of Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelor, Two and a Half Men and The King of Queens. And sometimes 24, but 24 has been lagging too.

It's still the only thing besides Deal or No Deal that NBC can even talk about without crying, so it's safe for at least another season.

The reality (pun intended) is that reality programming is a lot cheaper to make and appeals to a much larger demographic. Namely the idiot demographic which as we know are a vast percentile.

Hell, I can't wait for Big Brother to come back on this year but unlike well written shows like Lost, Heroes and a myriad of others it has no artistic merit. Not unless Nikki encased in carbonite as a Turner Prize winner is art.

Reality TV has been kicking the shit out of expensive to make cult TV for years. It's a travesty.

Seriously, if Cult TV didn't make major revenue back on DVD sales and merchandise then budgets we're familiar with on shows like Lost and Heroes just wouldn't be feasible because of the impact Reality TV has made on the market.

Fun Fact: a writer's strike is expected to begin in October. Scripted series are beginning production on their new seasons earlier in order to stockpile episodes if/when the strike happens.

Ironically, one of the issues at the table is the fact that reality shows aren't bound to Writer's Guild contracts because they don't technically have scripts. And if the strike happens, this coming winter and spring will see an explosion of more reality shows than ever before.

Ugh...

how long has there been talk of a writer's strike?

For months, actually, although it's in the news more now because the current season is ending. Everyone in Hollywood has known for years that the WGA contract is up this fall, and that the studios and writers are nowhere near agreement on things like compensation for DVD sales, etc.

Talks start in July, and if they don't reach an agreement by the deadline in October, the writers strike. Expect it to happen too, because the writers feel they got hosed in the last negotiation a few years ago.

We need to offer our services as scabs while the writters strike is on.

This sounds like a wonderful excuse to quit watching tv again :D

Too bad Aaron Spelling's dead, his shows were right up your alley. Especially in the 70s.

If Heroes: Origins is only 6 episodes, I'm hoping it won't have the chance to do much damage. If it's filling the gap over the break from Christmas to.. whenever it comes back on, it should work pretty good. Plus there is the chance that it could be just as kick ass as Heroes, although I don't get involved in any of the TV interactive shit, I"m sure there are thousands who love that stuff.

I've already quit watching most television because of the crap reality shows. I'd rather spam, it's more nutritious and delicious.

I think the Heroes: Origins idea is really clever. More sci-fi/fantasy shows should break out of the convential mold like this, and tell stories more like comics do, where a character or universe has more than one title going at once. Plus it cuts down on reruns and the dreaded "hiatus".

Imagine if Trek had been this innovative at any time in the past 20 years.

It depends if one of heroes has the power to MAKE HIS NAILS GROW REALLY FAST.

OMG I JUST CUT MINE TODAY (they actually do grow rather fast)
