When Desmond went back in time and told others about the island, and even met Charlie and told him too, it branched off an alternative reality where the plane crashed with no survivors, but the people on the island surrounded by the magnetic field were impervious to changes in the timeline.

To recap, the original plane crashed on the island, its occupants protected from changes in the timeline, then Desmond created a scenario that caused a second version of the plane to crash into the sea rather than on the island.

That way versions of the passangers can both be dead in the past and alive in the present.

Everything outside the island is an Alternative Reality created when Desmond first went back.

However, its also possible that Desmond keeps changing the reality on the island too, when he keeps preventing possibly futures from occuring as they should.

And I think I might be able to explain that one too, although things start getting complicated from here.

Island reality A, Desmond does not activate the failsafe, we dont know what happens, but the hatch probably implodes anyway, but he isnt thrown back in time, life on the island carries on much as we have seen so far.

Island reality B, Desmond is thrown back into the past, and when he returns to the island, reality B is several hours behind reality A.

When both Desmonds are standing in the same place in both A and B realities, Desmond B sees flashes of Desmond A's life.

Here's where it gets a little tricky, because when Des B changes something in reality B, reality A resets, and puts in place a sequence of events designed to bring A back to the point that Des B interfered with.

Do every time Des B saves Charlie B, Charlie A is put into another dangerous situation.

When they first revealed the "we found the plane with bodies!" thing I immediately thought of the DS9 episode 'Children Of Time' where they wanted to "clone" the Defiant at the end with one going back in time and crashing on the planet and the other getting home (but dickass old Odo ruined it).

Maybe Odo is hte smoke monster?
 
So where does Data's mother fit into all of this? She knew that Des had gone back in time and had to do certain things save everybody.
 
I think she was a smoke monster intrusion into Desmonds brain in the island, which manifested itself as a real person who only he could see in the past, much like Al in quantum leap.
 
Oh. The Smoke Monster was trying to stop Desmond from fucking everything up.
 
I think it's possible that Naomi was lying about the plane crash with no survivors OR DHARMA (or would that be Mitelos Biosciences since we know the fate of DHARMA on the island?) faked the news of the discovery of the crashed plane in order to halt the search. We know the Others are extremely powerful, and wealthy... with almost superhuman powers of information gathering, seems it wouldn't be too hard for them to also manipulate information.
 
Don't forget Locke's dad also said that the plane was found and "we're all in HELL OMG", so you'd have to explain why both him and Naomi were lying. I'm wondering why no one's really asked Naomi any tough questions yet. Last week she was up and about chatting with Charlie about his band, but she hasn't really explained who she is and why she had the photo yet, has she?
 
Naomi and Locke's dad could both have heard the same reports about the crashed plane, so they wouldn't really be lying about it. UNLESS Naomi is really an Other, then she could be lying and Locke's dad could just be telling what he thinks is the truth.

Don't know why they haven't really questioned Naomi.. maybe it's just because Desmond is so convinced that she's working for Penny.
