Yeah. What I really need to do is get the abscessed tooth extracted, probably, but the hospital here won't do it and I think I remember posting this before. Hm. So yeah, stuck with self-medicating.
Actually, a toothache fading out can mean either the abscess is subsiding... or it's getting worse. In my case, the toothache faded out because the infection moved down into the soft tissues, swelling them and blocking the nerve. Which meant that the tooth itself shut up for awhile, but the lymph node started growling. That's actually worse.
There are two ways to die from an abscess -- if the swelling gets too extreme, it can cut off your airway. Or -- as the infection chews away at bone matter, particles of that can break loose and make their way through the bloodstream to the heart.

It's kind of weird to be talking to him, and he makes some casual reference to it. We had a long talk about it once. He remembers it like remembering a dream or a nightmare. Absolutely regrets it, and can't really deal with it as though it were real. Prison made him cold and selfish, which he admits. He also has a bad habit of saying rude shit that pops into his head. You don't have any warm water or salt? You just put some table salt into a cup and get some warm water out of the tap. It will help kill the infection. Steal some salt packets from McDonalds! You don't need to make the water terribly salty, maybe a teaspoon in a cup.

Need something that'll give me a sore on the bottom of my mouth so the crap can drain. Yeah, I know that'll be nasty as hell, but the only other way to drain an abscess is surgically, which I can't afford.
I'm going to BK for something to chew on (with only one side of my face) because I'm starvin' my ass off. While I'm there, I'll steal a shitload of salt packets.
