Firefox 2.0 is here just a few days after IE7 has been launched. I of course have been test driving both of them. Microsoft has done a complete overhaul with IE7 adding many of the features that Firefox users have been using for along time now. My initial reactions to IE7 are very positive. You can see that the browser is a labour of love and the M$ team have pulled out all the stops to make IE7 into a current generation browser. And it's good, no doubt. IE6 was such a piece of crap that IE7 really needed to be built from the ground up. And while it does look like they traced Firefox onto their blueprints it does retain a certain slickness that Microsoft are going for with heading into the Vista generation.
But for me at least it's too little too late. Firefox 2.0 is installed and I won't be migrating from Mozilla to Miscosoft for my browser needs anytime soon.
I've just pimped it out with all my favourirte extensions and it's running smooth. Upgrading from 1.5 was easy and seamless and already I have to put FF2 just a touch ahead of IE7. And of course with Firefox I have the IE View extension which means I can open tabs inside Firefox with the IE7 browser.
Firefox isn't a generational leap like IE7 but then it had a much shorter distance to jump. It's still Firefox. It's just better.
The newest toys are a fully featured spell check device, anti-phishing and new extension controls as well as everything else we love about Firefox streamlined and updated. And add to that this snazzy new extension called Cooliris I found.
What it does takes a bit of getting used to but it's just pure pimp. By hovering your mouse cursor over a link it will open a window to that link which allows you to seamlessly check what is behind it and use, read, post in it with full browser functionality. You have to use it to see what I mean.
Observe:

Now all I have to do is wait for the updated MacFox theme which is compatible with 2.0 and I'm happy as can be.
