They only look pretty because they use some special gizmos that pic up stuff normal cameras don't. If you actually went there all those nebulae would look proper shite.

That image (taken with a disposable camera aboard the ISS) illustrates my point exactly. Seen with the naked eye, the crab nebula looks remarkably like the "Srädk" range of ottomans.
