Basically, unless you are Sunny von Bülow, you're going to serve at least once in your life.

Refuse to take the oath at the start of the day. Say its against your personal views, or something. The refusing to say the pledge of allegence works too.

It's not root canal, it's jury duty. I don't mind serving, although I do mind losing half a week's pay.

That is, as long as I don't get picked. So far I've been lucky in that regard. If I get picked and get stuck for a week or two, someone's gonna have to be my sugar daddy to get me through next month's bills...

Havent done mine since I was 18, the letter came shortly after my birthday as if they were just waiting for me to come of age.

The state pays $40 a day, unless you're a full-time employee of a company with 10+ employees. Then the company is supposed to shell out the $40.

It's New York City, they call in hundreds upon hundreds of people every day. They'd go broke paying them a decent fee.

When it comes to a major trial, they are very lenient about not forcing people to serve, even if they can't prove financial hardship.

They only keep the ones who are stupid enough to raise their hands when they ask who can serve on a trial that may take up to a month or two. Which is also why they have to call hundreds of people in each day.

This way people with jobs can keep them, and the unemployed have someplace to go every day, leaving the parks less congested for the rest of us at lunchtime.
