I'm thinking of starting Babylon 5

should I bother - Is it good?

Yes and Yes.

If you like too extensively interwoven storylines and a show that shits over itself after the 5 year plan is over.

I was going to get season 1 DVD but just noticed it doesn't have the pilot episode, you have to buy that seperate. bastards!

You shoulent have too...

The copy ive seen had the pilot episode in it.

No and yes.

It was good at the time, but looks horribly dated now.

If you want a show where the FX looks like it was done on a commador amiga for a game you could buy in the bargin bin, where the main star is so wooden he was dumped at hte end of the 1st season without so much as a leaving episode.

five years of story crammed into four years, then realising they have another year and no story to fill it with.

Then follow it all up with more turgid stories designed to milk more money out of the cash cow, each worse than the last.

So no, dont bother, watch farscape instead.

Farscape is better.

Seasons 2, 3, and 4 of B5 are pretty good but can't hold a candle to FS.

Farscape sucked muppet dick.

B5 always seemed too grey to me.

Its classic SF.

i watched my fair share of B5 episodes & it just never excited me...not even when Laura Ingalls guest appeared.:)

And NO, Farscape did NOT "suck muppet dick"! One of the best damn sci-fi series EVAR!!

Henoch, I think we might be soul mates!

I watched the pilot episode (Gathering) and it was pretty awful all round - bad acting, dialogue, plot, and yes, horribly dated SFX (I think the CGI must have looked terrible even back in 1993)

however, I assume it must get better, since it has loyal fans and a good rep with critics - and it could hardly get worse. After all, early TNG episodes were dire too.

And that Strazinyski guy sounds like a bit of an ass from what I've read. Still, I'll give it a shot.

Londo was the only good actor/character

I liked Kosh on B5.

The pilot episode is "should" be a two parter titled "The Gathering".

I could never get in to it, though it has its moments from the episodes I watched.

Another vote for Farscape here. You just can't go wrong with that frelling show.

Although be warned if you watch it for too long you will want to personally perform a rhinoplasty on Aeyrn.

I agree with Dual in that the best seasons were 2-4. I never even watched season 5.

Even with some truly shitty dialogue, I liked some of the characters: G'kar & Londo, mostly. Ivanova had her appeal, as did that Ranger who had thing for her. But much of the cast was squandered: Talia's departure was a joke; that Fury pilot who was in Weird Science was a waste of oxygen and I could never figure out what the fuck they were trying to do with Garibaldi. It may have been bad planning or RL developments getting in the way (Andrea Thompson left to become an anchor; Claudia Christian got canned when she asked for more vacation time [?]). And yeah, that first season lead actor always looked like the world forgot to give him a blowjob that morning --although he eventually came back for a pretty good two-parter that wrapped up his role in a neat little package.

New Battlestar Galactica.

As I remember it, the effects were quite impressive at the time, but solely because no other scifi shows had CGI at that point. All the others still used models, meaning less explosions and less dynamic camera movements. Now that the rest of the scifi world has caught up, B5's computer gamey effects look crap.
