Interesting Tom Bombadil essay (for Wacky)

Since Wacky is probably the ONLY person who will even read it. And he might not even bother.

I thought it was interesting. I, like being a PT defender am a hard-core Tom Bombadil defender (that sounded gay) And I find him one of the most interesting characters in the whole saga. You're never quite sure about Tom, he doesn't fall on either side of the ring and cares not a jot for The War of The Ring. Not to mention the fact that the One Ring holds no dominion over him whatsoever. Plus, he's a lot of fun. (I don't care what anyone says, Bombadil is a great character!)

*saddened*

Tom Bombadil is Tolkien's moral ideal.

Tom was always one of my favourite characters.

....disappointed he was not included, but I understand how he wouldn't have fit in well to the flow of the screenplay.
hard to maintain that dramatic tension and all if there's a character running around unconcerned by affairs of Middle Earth.

ooops...and sorry for hijacking your thread Wacky!

hmmm...even though that silly owl was my idea and it detracts from the zeitgeist of Menty's brilliant design, it's kinda cute.

(well if one's going to be highjacking threads instead of attending church as the Good Lord Intended, might as well be thorough. I'm going to burn anyway.

If I don't wear sunblock.)

Thanks. I think I've read that before, I went through a peroid of reading "Who Is Tom Bombadil!?" articles a couple of years ago.

As did I. There was a MUCH better essay on it but I can't find it. Since I'm reading the books AGAIN it brings it to my interest once more.

Maybe Tom was supposed to be JESUS OMG.

Why does everyone hate Tom?

Because they're fags?

Good point.

Or because they've got a "reading is teh gay get to the cool bits this book is too slow omg" mentality.

Yeah! Thats what everyone says at TBBS. WTF?

They skip entire chapters, all the songs, hate Bombadil and complain that it's too slow

People who skip the songs just don't "get" what Tolkien was trying to create, IMMHO.

well, look at society today:
it doesn't exactly promote deep thinking, never mind taking the time to read everything an author actually wrote in his or her book, OMG!

if it can't be understood in a twenty- second sound bite then it's too much work!!

Seeing as most of them are stories within themselves painting the tapestry of Middle Earth.

If you're bored of reading words why are you reading in the first place.

The worst, WORST argument is that it's too long. So have you got an inoperable brain tumor that will kill you in three days? Why MUST you read it at such a rate if its *wah* too long.

^oh, and that's for those that can even be arsed to READ a frickin book: you don't know how many times I've heard: "oh, I've seen the movie, thus am a complete expert on the subject, " or, "I'll wait til it comes out in film".

aieeeeeee.

Ever seen the Taj Mahal in all it's glory? It's quite amazing.

Nah, don't need to. Saw a picture once.

There's a new temple in India that's comparible to the Taj...
