is the new REM album any good?

I'm thinking about getting it. Supposedly it's a "return to form."

Ooo, yeah, it is. It's a real "rock" album, and the songwriting is better than usual. It's short (34 minutes?) but the shortness works in its favor.

I lost interest in them when Green came out... they've had a few good albums since then (Automatic for the People, Monster), but they were pretty hit-and-miss for me.

Yeah, for a time I couldn't being myself to listen to anything from the post-indie REM alternative rock period. Eventually I came to admit that they were a great alt-rock band, even though they were (shudder) different rom before and commercially appealling.

Then they lost that and became horrible.

The video collection from their I.R.S. days is really good... though it's really jarring when the big rock drum sound kicks in near the end on "The One I Love".
