Is "Torchwood" any good?

It was, and the ending was nicely downbeat(with the woman's daughter and husbandy bloke dying/leaving forever), but the 3D green bony no-genitalia aliens of the week were a bit of a let down.
 
Why did they appear visible at the party anyway when they'd been invisible in all the previous scenes? And what was Jack doing in Lahore in 1909 the bastard?
 
And why are they tiny and white and glowy when they're flying around at the beginning, and still quite small but green in the trees at the end, but when they start fisting people they're as tall as someone's grandmother.

And why did they kill the old lady who really liked them, thus pissing off the one man who might've been able to kill them, provided he had a little motivation?
 
Yeah, killing the old lady made no sense at that time since she'd been interested in them for at least 60 years...and who looks after her cat now!?
