I've taken up drawing.

Yes, for the first time in about 6 years I've put pencil to paper. I'm not a very good artist but I was bored so I thought I would draw something interesting. It's not very good but it's the first picture I have drawn in years and I was trying to get my dimensions right, which I think I did pretty well despite a bit of difficulty. The hands of course are always a bitch and getting everything into correct proportions.

Anyway, here is my first foray into what will probably take up a lot of my free time from now on. It's my FIRST picture, I am assuredly going to improve somewhat. Tell me what you think:

Oh I like it. I like the detail of the uniform. Even the expression on his face communicates and for a first try... EXCELLENT!!!!

Menty,

You obviously have a natural talent. So develop that.

here's how, since you already have a grasp of costuming and surface details, focus on more gesture work. more mass shapes to find a sound form. This will enable your proportions while at the same time giving you that flexiblility. Once you've regained this, the other things you do naturally well will embellish your work. Try it out and post the results here if you don't mind.

And for some other studies? I can't stress enough drawing from life and photos. It's boring at first, but damn dude, it will make you kick ass.

Nice work. I'm an arthurian fan myself!

I have no talent and I do mean NO talent!!!

I love the detail..... and I envy people who can draw.

;)
mm

me too. I've always wanted to be able to draw, but I'm absolutely useless - I can barely draw a stickman:mrgreen:

I guess either you've got it or you haven't.

good work, ment!

Mental, great drawing but I'm a little concerned by the violent nature of the subject matter. I'm worried about you. Are you under a lot of stress lately?

Thanks, Hunter.

I will be trying some different things and I want to really try and nail different poses and positions of people. I will definitly post some more stuff as soon as I get round to drawing it. I will probably try somethig different tomorrow. This was just testing the waters. I don't expect to become a great artist or anything but I would like to get proficient and improve as much as possible. It's just an enjoyable thing to take up. I suggest those who think they can't draw have a crack at it. Don't just hit a blank page, copy another drawing or something and try and get it looking as good as possible.

I made quite a few mistakes in this picture that are now glaring at me but it doesn't matter, it's good practice.

Drawing while talent enbables is extremely techinical and requires contant practice.

That's like asking a woman or a feeble man to refrain from taking martial arts disciplines cause they can't stretch like Jet li.

It can be learned!

Take a life drawing or ask friends/family to pose for you, even if it's just while they're watching t.v.

This natural observation of the form will enable you in future ventures. You can always get flashy later, but if you pick up bad habits from the get go, it's honestly just more work to over come.

So, take it from someone who's been trying to carve a path to success in this venture.

Also if any of you are interested in excercises or practices let me know, we have places for you to try it out. There's no harm in trying. Only harm in asking yourself if you should've but dared not too.

ok, there's a few quickies and examples.

I've also done a western comic, as I love westerns and some other stuff, I'm more of an indy guy, but I dig mainstream too.

You know I'm always ready with a few lyrics.

I'm doing a scetch of Gollum now since he has such an interesting shape. I am drawing from a collecters edition statuette I have of him. Trying to translate 3D space into a 2D drawing is tricky. I have a halogen heater aimed at my desk and myself (because it's cold) and it's giving it some nice shadows to find the shape from.

I will post it up as soon as I finish it. Who know when that will be, maybe never, maybe an hour. We will see.. :D

Looks good Menty. It needs some small detail work, but that's just because I go nuts with detail when I draw.

here's an old one I did about 3 years ago. The only one I have on my computer because I fried my scanner a while back. It's pretty damn big and mostly pen.
