Just watched the Space Station go overhead

Never seen it so bright before!

Discovery is attached and the space station has doubled in size with those Japanese modules so it's quite spectacular to see it cross overhead.

I had a look through the binocs and you could make out the shape even.

Only lasts for about a minute in the sky before it dips in to the shadow of the Earth but I recommend finding out when it's crossing over your neck of the woods and having a gander if you get the chance.

is it even possible to see it in a bright city?
maybe ill head to the other side of the golden gate bridge
you can actually see some stars near the top of some hills there...

Yes, you will see it even with a lot of light pollution. It's incredibly bright. You can even make out its irregular shape with the naked eye.

It takes 90 minutes for the ISS to travel around the Earth so you could watch it tonight if you find the times. It's exceptionally good viewing for the next week or so.

ill use

Very cool, Menty. I've seen the thing a few times and it is indeed very bright...moreso now I would imagine. Usually when we have a local flyover the weather is shit, though.

You can go to http://www.heavens-above.com/ , enter your viewing location data, and it will spit out various viewing times for you.

I aint going to see Jack shit from my location

Dammit.. I can't figure out how to use that site. I put Tampa as my location, cause it's close enough and it just says 27.9470°N, 82.4590°W What does that mean?

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out! DEE DEE DEE!

It's going to start crossing the States in the next 5 minutes or so if anyone wants to go out and check it out.

It's getting close!

OK.. I couldn't see it, but I hope to see it when it passes again tonight. How far above the horizon is 10 degrees? I bet the trees will block my view :(

I can't figure out how to work that damn site either.

But the trees would most definitely block it here :(

Click on the "from database" link, then click on your country, then enter the name of your town. This will take you back to the first page except it will have your latitude and longitude on there now. If you click on where is says 10 day predictions for ISS, it will take you to a page with a timetable.

Yeah, it really doesn't have to be that difficult :P

Thanks, Cassie!

And if you click on a date it will bring up a sky map.

I have a perfect viewing opportunity tonight around 9:30pm. Magnitude -2.5, about four minutes, almost directly overhead. Of course, it's cloudy. :)

I'm going to try to see it at about 10:44.. but it's going to be pretty low on the horizon if I'm reading all that right.

I can barely see stars through the New York skyline. I doubt I'll see it here.

As noted before unless you have extreme light pollution you will probably make it out due to the incredible brightness. The new modules and Discovery are adding to the magnitude a whole lot right now as well.

I hope I can, it would be awesome to see something bright in the sky and not assume it's patrolling the island.

Still figuring out how to work the website, although it says the station is over Africa at the moment.
