Against a herald of Galactus? He must have been on fire (No pun intended)

I had a comic book of Spidey vs. Dr Doom... Spidey was chasing some old cat-burglar guy, and Doom wanted one of the diamonds/gems the guy had.

At the end, Doom spared him, and Spidey looked like Bruce Willis at the end of a Die Hard film.

And Spidey's all "STEP OFF, BITCHES! I DO WHAT I WANT!"

I hate when they reduce their bad ass villains (in the case you cited: Dr. Doom) to petty thuggery!
 
At least the symbiote found someone w/ ballz.

Doom wanted the gem (Which was about the size of a spark plug) to contact his mother somehow.

When he finally confronted them (And spared them both) he took a 2nd, pure diamond the size of a pineapple and crushed it in has hand while stating that it was a useless bauble, leaving the cat burglar in tears.

Ok, that makes sense! Doom has this serious mother fixation... borders on the obscene and incestuousl!

There's this cool hardback book from the mid to late 80's with Doc Strange and Doc Doom where they battle Mephisto in Hell for the soul of Doom's mommy. All pencilled by Mike Mignola. (The creator of Hellboy.)

Good stuff.

Actually, during that time, the black costume (that Spidey's wearing) was just a simple, normal cloth costume, the symbiote having been confined by the FF (before it escaped.)

For awhile, Spidey was alternating between both. It wasn't until the appearance of Venom, which made Mary Jane piss herself, that Spidey decided to ditch the black duds for good.
 
1998? I was waaay off! It has to be earlier than 1998.

What did you think of Maximum Carnage? I loved it. Doppleganger was creepy.
 
By the time Maximum Carnage rolled around I was long gone from Spidey. He was my first comic book love, but I outgrew him.... or they steered him in a direction I was no longer interested in. I don't know.

If you say it's a cool story, though, I'd be interested to check it out now.

I do remember the images of Doppelganger; very cool!
