Well it could be argued that his existence is not linear and he knows what will happen.
The conversation with Nemesis guy on the beach seems to indicate that when he tells him "It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress"
And of course his interactions with the Losties in the past all point to the fact that he knew they were special and that he had knowledge of their later lives on the island.
Whether he can actually travel through time is not known but he does seem to have a pretty strong understanding of the future.
On another point I think it's a safe bet to say that the Nemesis guy at the start is the monster. It makes sense.
