What you are missing is that the diagonal line is not exact. Observe:

I have marked where the slopes change with the arrows. The numbers 1234 are actually when lined together a VERY narrow parallelogram.
It's a Fibonacci sequence and the lost unit is hard to see with the eye.
And now everything becomes clear. Good puzzle.
