I think I remember you saying you are a Michael Moorcock fan.. didn't you say that before? Anyway I was going to order some books soon and wondered which one you'd recommend to start with. He has a book on the SF Masterworks list and a couple on the Fantasy Masterworks list. Millennium is republishing classics.. if you're wondering what the Masterwork stuff is.

You can check all that out here http://www.sfsite.com/lists/orion01.htm if you want.

Dear Mentalist, I'm bumping this thread ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

answer me I have money burning a hole in my pockets OMG I DON'T HAVE POCKETS I do however have a card with numbers on it that says I can buy stuff I'd like to buy some books please tell me which book of the Michael Moorcock variety to buy or I'll be forced to use the search function and that could bring about the end of the world. That is what the voice in my head tells me. I always do what that voice says because I htink ith can ssee the future.

Get Elric of Melnibone. Highly reccommended and the best place to start with Moorcock since it's his most famous work and the guy has written a billion books and it's hard to navigate a writing career so prolific. And plus if fucking rocks the casbah.

Yes, Elric...

Btw, don't think about buying that version I linked to. You can get it for much cheaper, I'm betting, and you should be able to find the complete Elric works as one book (I have it.)

Hallowed is the Mentalist.

I'll order it today, because I'm almost out of books. I bet I can find it at Powells, my most favorite book getting place.

I might have to read it again now. I can see it sitting on my shelf from here and its been a while.

I'm going to order The Chronicles of Amber too. I'm in a fantasy reading mood.. just finished several science fiction books and am currently slogging through Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.. good story but PKD was high.

Ever read any Phillip Pullman? The Dark Materials series is outstanding.

No but I have heard he's good. Somehow in my misspent youth, I missed a lot of the greats.. but that just means I can catch up on all of them. I think I'll order A Canticle for Leibowitz too. O so many books. I will have them all someday.

Menty, dumb question... I found the complete Amber Chronicles 1-10 for $23 and the SF Masterworks edition that just says The Amber Chronicles (only $6) are these the same book?

Must be since the ten books are individually named. The Amber Chronicles are the whole thing.

dammit.. Powells has Elric of Melnibone on backorder.

hmm, the expensive one must be a special edition or something.. anyway ordered the cheaper one.

I just ordered the Elric of Melnibone Saga from Amazon.. has the first three all in one. I don't think it would have been much cheaper to order them all separately because of shipping... but I had a $15 gift certificate so it only cost me about $10 anyway.

YAY

Bump; for Menty & Cassie:

I just read those over this past winter and was very, very satisfied. I had always heard good things and just hadn't gotten around to it, as it looked like a typical fantasy series. It is anything but typical. By the time you get to the third book it is rocking that shit in multi-dimensional storm of awesomenessitude.

Me too.. actually this thread is the reason I read them in the first place. Since His Dark Materials is labeled as "young adult" fantasy, I thought they'd be Harry Potter-ish and wasn't really interested. I loved them.. loved them enough that I'll definitely read them again some day.

YOU BETTER!!!

^ a pal in the fine State of Minneasota knew I had read them and asked me about them cos apparently they are gonna be banned at her kid's school. :(

... told her they were great (Pullman's incredibly well-versed on many, many subjects, and the books have lo, so many layers) and well-regarded in our household, but not to take my word for it, but to read them for herself.
Her kid is really intelligent and would enjoy them, IMHO.

SD, who did that drawing?
Looks like Walt Simonson's hand, 'though I don't know if it's a one-shot or from some longer work.
