Michael Jordan better than LeBron James in every way, says poll of NBA fans
To account for the generation gap -- Jordan last played in the season before James entered the league in 2003 -- the 600 respondents were split evenly into two age groups: 18-34 and 35 and older. Jordan naturally led by almost 4-to-1 (79%) in the older half, but even in the younger group, Jordan was preferred by nearly 2-to-1 (66%).

Basketball aside, 65% of fans said they would rather have a drink with Jordan than James, and 62% said Jordan -- now the owner of the Charlotte Hornets has had a more positive impact off the court.

The Last Dance: Dennis Rodman's adventure in professional wrestling

i

By 1997, Dennis Rodman was a three-time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls and known as one of the best rebounders in hoops history. He also was a flamboyant, attention-demanding character off of the court, with extravagant attire and a rock star party attitude. He had a cool nickname, "The Worm," and demanded your gaze with his flashy hair colors.

Michael Jordan: A history of flight

i

YEARS AGO, AFTER a bad hurricane hit Wilmington, North Carolina, Michael Jordan came back to help the recovery effort. Jordan doesn't go home very often, but he had some friends with him on that trip and wanted to show them where he'd grown up while they were in town. The house, a middle-class split-level, is at 4647 Gordon Road, near U.S. Highway 117. It's the address where Dean Smith sent recruiting letters. Out front, Jordan seemed sentimental. One of the friends with him said later they didn't feel comfortable describing the scene. It felt private. "How do most people feel when they go back to see their childhood home?" the person explained. "MJ is human." The documentary tells the familiar story of Michael. Cut from his high school basketball team to six-time champion of the NBA. It is a story about will and work, and nearly every viewer knows how it ends. But still they're compelled, because even though he is among the most known people on the planet, he remains a mystery. We know the whats but not the whys.

It was in the Laney High School gym, after he had been put on the junior varsity squad as a sophomore, that Michael Jordan realized the power of turning everyone into an adversary, real or imagined. Today, the complex bears his name

Michael Jordan to Rod Thorn: I won't play if Isiah Thomas is on Dream Team

Old audio of Michael Jordan has surfaced in which he says he told NBA executive Rod Thorn, who was part of the USA Basketball selection committee, that he wouldn't play on the Dream Team in 1992 if Detroit Pistons star point guard Isiah Thomas was also selected to the team."Rod Thorn called me, and I said, 'Rod, I won't play if Isiah Thomas is on the team,'" Jordan is heard telling reporter Jack McCallum in a 2011 interview, which was aired on his podcast " The Dream Team Tapes." "[Thorn] assured me," Jordan is heard saying in the old interview. "He said, 'You know what? Chuck doesn't want Isiah. So, Isiah is not going to be part of the team.'"

From the archives: The true story behind Michael Jordan's brief-but-promising baseball career

He has made it very exciting tonight. With the Barons leading 5-1, Jordan steps in for the fourth time ... two of his three at-bats were near homers ... he skied deep to left center when he hit the ball to the wall in the fourth, and then in the sixth, Jordan pulled the ball a little bit more and missed by 2 feet ... Fly ball deep to left again, Ratliff going back, back to the warning track, looking up ... IT IS GON-ZO JORDAN! He's done it!
-- Curt Bloom, Birmingham Barons play-by-play announcer, July 30, 1994

Michael Jordan 'pained and plain angry' over George Floyd's death, joins call for change

Charlotte Hornets owner and Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan joined the chorus of athletes, coaches and executives expressing their grief and outrage over the death of George Floyd. "I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry," Jordan said in a statement Sunday. "... I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough." Floyd, a black man, died last week in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes. Floyd's death has sparked protests in cities across the United States.

"I don't have the answers, but our collective voices show strength and the inability to be divided by others," Jordan said. "We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality. We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability. Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all."

Michael Jordan Flu Game shoes among high-priced Jordan memorabilia.
Jordan is now almost synonymous with Nike, but he was a Converse man throughout college and wore the brand's shoes during the 1984 Summer Games. The pair sold was worn during the gold medal game when Jordan scored 20 points to win the first of his two Olympic gold medals.

Michael Jordan joins Roy Williams, former Tar Heels in condemning systematic racism
The North Carolina video starts with Williams recounting the impact legendary coach Dean Smith made by signing Charlie Scott, the first African American scholarship athlete in the school's history. Scott was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

"Systematic racism has to stop now," Jordan said in the video. "We must take the time to listen and educate our family, our friends, our children on social injustice and racial inequality. Black Lives Matter more now than ever before. We have to get this right, so please take time to educate yourself and improve the lives of many people, many Black people. Thank you."

Scottie Pippen downplays Michael Jordan rift after 'Last Dance'

Scottie Pippen says he has talked with Michael Jordan since "The Last Dance" documentary aired in the spring, and he downplayed any rift between the retired Chicago Bulls stars."Why would I be offended by anything that happened 30 years ago?" Pippen said. Jordan widely praised Pippen in the documentary that chronicled the Bulls' 1990s dynasty as the best teammate he ever had. But Jordan called out Pippen in the second episode for making a "selfish" decision to delay offseason surgery on a ruptured tendon in his ankle until after the start of the 1997-98 season. Jordan said in the documentary he didn't understand Pippen's decision. There were reports that Pippen was unhappy with his portrayal in the documentary, but he said Tuesday, "I wasn't upset about it." The documentary also included Pippen's refusal to enter Game 3 of the 1994 Eastern Conference semifinals in the final seconds."It didn't bother me at all," Pippen said. "It was an opportunity for our younger generation that hadn't seen or knew anything about basketball in the '90s." The series aired over five consecutive Sunday nights in April and May and included never-before-seen footage from the 1997-98 season, when the team chased its sixth championship in a span of eight years.

Man convicted in death of Michael Jordan's father, James, to be paroled

One of two men convicted in the murder of Michael Jordan's father in 1993 will be released from prison in three years, state officials said Tuesday. The N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission announced in a three-paragraph statement that it has granted parole to Larry Demery, who is to be released in August 2023, news outlets reported. The 2023 release date arises from a portion of Demery's parole agreement that stipulates he will take part in a program that provides scholastic and vocational help to prepare him for life after he is released from prison, said Greg Thomas, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Public Safety. Green said previously that he and Demery were both at a cookout when his friend left to meet someone for a drug deal. He said Demery returned hours later, looking shaken and asking him to help dispose of Jordan's body in the swamp. Green has said that Demery told him he mistook James Jordan for a drug connection and shot him after an altercation.

Sources: Michael Jordan voice of reason during NBA owners meeting

As the NBA continues to navigate its next steps after the extraordinary decision of the Milwaukee Bucks not to play their playoff game against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday over social justice issues, prompting the cancellation of games throughout multiple professional sports, a recognizable figure has emerged as a go-between NBA players and owners: Michael Jordan. Jordan, owner of the Charlotte Hornets and the only Black majority owner in the league reached out to National Basketball Players Association president Chris Paul, league sources told ESPN, in advance of the owners meeting to get a better understanding of what the players hoped to achieve going forward and to offer assistance as they make their case to the NBA board of governors. Jordan also spoke with Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook about issues of social justice that initially left some stars advocating for the cancellation of the season.

Michael Jordan's road to being a NASCAR owner, 14 years in the making
Michael Jordan became the first Black principal owner of a full-time NASCAR Cup team since 1973.

Whenever Jordan made an appearance at Daytona International Speedway or Charlotte Motor Speedway, it caused a stir. But few realized that he was already very familiar with both racetracks. As a kid growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, his father, James, would often take Michael and his siblings to Winston Cup Series races around the Carolinas, places like Charlotte, Darlington and Rockingham, and even all the way to Daytona Beach, Florida.
