Trial and error. Notice you can't just hit Thief! and that be it.
Notice the person's point total.
Notice your's.
Refresh the screen and do it again.
Then, thieve. Not more than you have, not more than they have or you will automatically fail.

You could also :gasp:,... Not do it.

But I suppose that would be a stretch.
