Less than two weeks after Nate Diaz defeated Jorge Masvidal in a boxing match, a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Miami on Monday claiming that Diaz is owed $9 million by promoter Solomon Engel and his company, Fanmio. In a filing acquired by ESPN, Diaz claims that he entered an agreement with Engel and Fanmio to be paid $10 million for the fight against Masvidal with $1 million paid upfront and $9 million paid after the event. The lawsuit states that Engel is now reneging on the deal, claiming that the event is going to lose money. Diaz is suing for both fraud and breach of contract.
"Nate Diaz has filed a frivolous lawsuit against Fanmio which claims that fraud and breach of contract were committed by Fanmio, yet neither has taken place," Engel said in a statement. "In fact, Diaz has already been paid seven figures in connection with the fight. I look forward to resolving this dispute through the appropriate process and am confident that justice will prevail." Diaz defeated Masvidal by majority decision in a 10-round boxing match on July 6. The event took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and DAZN hosted the pay-per-view broadcast. A news release issued after the event stated that the event was a sellout with 18,040 fans at the Honda Center.
Conor McGregor hints at future in bare-knuckle promotion
Connor McGregor, who announced earlier this year that he was a co-owner of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships, also is expressing interest in competing as a "player/manager" once his UFC contract expires. McGregor addressed his current contract situation at a news conference Thursday in Spain for the bare-knuckle promotion's upcoming event on Oct. 12. One of the fights left on McGregor's current UFC contract is expected to be against Michael Chandler. McGregor has since teased that his return was imminent and that he is confident a fight with Chandler would happen before the end of 2024. UFC president Dana White has suggested that the fight "has to happen," and it seems that all parties are looking to settle on a fight date sooner than later. During his time away from fighting, McGregor has taken an interest in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships [BKFC]. His attendance at a recent event got the ball rolling on the Irishman striking a deal as a co-owner, and he now has set his sights on seeing the sport grow. But before McGregor can toss his hat into a BKFC ring, he knows he will have to fulfill his contractual obligations to the UFC.
Tony Ferguson sets UFC record with eighth consecutive defeat
Former UFC interim champion Tony Ferguson has set a new record for consecutive defeats in the Octagon. Ferguson (25-10) suffered a submission loss to Michael Chiesa in the first round of their welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. It marked Ferguson's eighth loss in a row, surpassing the previous record of seven by BJ Penn. Immediately after the bout, Ferguson, 40, removed his gloves, which is a symbolic gesture of retirement. He stopped short of officially retiring, however, and went on to tell UFC cameras in the back that, "It ain't time, I got s--- to work on." Ferguson was considered one of the best fighters on the planet when this skid first began. In 2020, he was supposed to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in what would have been one of the most anticipated lightweight title fights of all time, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. Ferguson ultimately fought Justin Gaethje for an interim title and lost via TKO in the fifth round.
