Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) - Thought I'd watch this because it's on Amazon. It's...very silly. Like, even sillier than Godzilla V Kong, which is fine since I liked how silly that was...but sadly this isn't as good or fun as that one. I know the human stuff in Monarch can be a bit soap opera and melodramatic, but at least the characters feel like people and you do care about them a bit (well, I do anyway.) This does absolutely NO character work. Rebecca Hall's realationship with her daughter is meant to be the haert of it, but they hardly have any moments together so it's impossibly to care. The comic relief conspiracy theory podcaster guy from GVK returns (because in movies, conspiracy theory podcasters are harmless and know THE TRUTH) and contributs ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING to the movie. LIke there's literally no reason they bring him along. Then you have Dan Steven as a secon comic relief character: a quirky monkey vet who flies a spaceship that plays his own theme music (it's all a bit Star Lord.) And yeah, he at least has a few funny moments since Dan Stevens is great at over the top ridiculousness, but he's barely a character either. I didn't feel engaged until amost an hour in when there's a dialogue-free scene betwee Kong and the evil monkey which is far more compelling than any of the human scenes. Godzilla also doesn't get much to do: in the first half he'll appear for like a few seconds doing something random, it'll cut to a generic Monarch guy going "Godzilla is going to eat that pink stuff!" then Godzilla will eat some pink stuff. It's all so he can turn pink which makes him stronger, I guess? Then, despite the previous movie being all about Kong and Godzilla making friends, he attacks Kong when Kong asks for help and they destroy the Egyptian pyramids. What an asshole! Then Mothra shows up to tell Godzilla to be nice because there was a prophecy that said Mothra would have to do that one day, or something. I'm not saying it doesn't have fun stuff, though! That Godzilla/Kong fight IS fun, with Godzilla fucking suplexing Kong at one point, even though it's a total retread of the previous movie. There's a bit where Kong uses a Baby Kong as a weapon to beat up bad monkeys, which is hilarious. The final fight in Rio (where probably a million people must have die but we don't see any of them so it's fine!) is fun. But man there's so much crappy exposition and randomness to ge through before you get the fun parts.
