Thai prison authorities Tuesday banned personal gifts for inmates in a bid to eradicate increasingly bizarre forms of drug smuggling, including stuffed toads, curry and clams.

Dead toads, gutted and filled with drugs, then thrown over prison walls were one of the more unusual way of smuggling in drugs, an official said.

Amphetamine pills have been found in straws, stuffed into hollow stems of morning glory plants and hidden in red curry, while clams have had their meat removed and replaced with drugs wrapped in plastic.

Officials were finding illicit drugs on prisoners two or three times a week, Wanchai said, adding the new ban should help reduce the problem.

Drugs used to be hidden in personal belongings such as soap, baby powder, toothpaste or milk, but strict checks by prison authorities have led visitors to changes their methods.
