Bill Russell's No. 6 to be retired across NBA following legend's death last month

The NBA will honor the legacy of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell by retiring his No. 6 jersey for all 30 teams, the league and the National Basketball Players Association announced Thursday. Russell becomes the first player in NBA history to have his jersey retired leaguewide. Additionally, all NBA players will wear a commemorative patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys during the 2022-23 season, and every court will display a shamrock-shaped logo with Russell's No. 6 on the sideline near the scorer's table. Starting with the 2022-23 season, no NBA team will be allowed to issue No. 6 to any player. Players who currently wear No. 6 -- such as Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James may continue to do so. According to Basketball Reference, 25 players, including James, Kristaps Porzingis, Alex Caruso, Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams, wore No. 6 last season. Russell remains second all time in NBA history in rebounds (21,620) and rebounds per game (22.5). NBA players must be vaccinated or have medical clearance to play in Canada, memo says

The NBA informed teams Monday that players still need to have either received a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine, or been given a medical clearance from getting one, in order to play games in Canada, according to a league memo obtained by ESPN. The memo also states that, should players be ineligible to play in games in Canada, teams must list them as, "Out - Health and Safety Protocols," and they will lose their pay for any games missed due to not being vaccinated. Those are the same rules that governed being able to play in Toronto since the middle of last season -- rules that prohibited at least two players, Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving and Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Tjybulle, from participating in road games against the Raptors last season.

Vanessa Bryant's attorney argues photos of Kobe Bryant's remains shared 'for a laugh'

An institutional "culture of callousness" led Los Angeles County deputies and firefighters to shoot and share photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and other victims of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed the Lakers star, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others, a lawyer for Bryant's widow told a jury on Wednesday.
The county already agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle a similar case brought by two families whose relatives died in the crash. Bryant and Chester declined to settle. Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and other parents and players were flying to a girls basketball tournament when their chartered helicopter crashed in the fog. Federal safety officials blamed pilot error for the wreck.

NBA Power Rankings: Where the Nets, Lakers and all 30 teams stand ahead of the 2022-23 season

No. 1: Golden State
The 2022 NBA draft is in the rearview mirror, summer league has come and gone and most free agents have inked new deals.

The Warriors lost Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr., but they brought in Fonts DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green -- two players that, on paper, fit the Warriors' system. If they look as good with Golden State in reality as they do hypothetically -- in addition to their youngsters taking the next step and their core remaining the same -- the Warriors should be just as dangerous in 2022-23.

No. 2 - No. 29?

No. 30: Houston

The Rockets continued their youth movement by drafting a pair of forwards -- Jabari Smith Jr. (third overall) and Tari Eason (17th) -- in June's draft. Smith now slots in alongside Jalen Green as the centerpieces of Houston's rebuild in the post-James Harden era, as the Rockets will have a very young, yet intriguing roster to follow.

The Lakers legend had two Hall of Fame-worthy careers in his 20 years, one wearing No. 8 and the other wearing No. 24

It didn't matter whether Bryant was wearing No. 8 or No. 24, he was putting up numbers, ones that were almost identical in each jersey. He scored more points in each jersey number than Hall of Famers Tiny Archibald, James Worthy and Pete Maravich scored in their entire careers.

Why the Kevin Durant trade talks have stalled and where they go from here

It has been exactly four weeks since the news broke that Kevin Durant asked the Brooklyn Nets for a trade despite having four years left on his contract. Durant, who has played just 90 games in his three seasons with the Nets, could be the centerpiece of one of the biggest superstar trades in recent memory -- or his trade demand could end up being a strange footnote in what ends up being a lengthy tenure in Brooklyn. Even after Monday's news that the Nets and the Boston Celtics have engaged in talks on a potential Durant trade, we seem no closer to a resolution that could upend the NBA championship picture heading into the 2022-23 season. So let's discuss where the Durant situation sits, how the Celtics' potential trade package matches up with the other teams we've heard connected to Durant and where things could be headed.

USA Basketball cruises past Uruguay in World Cup qualifier

A special pregame surprise was awaiting the U.S. World Cup qualifying team Thursday night, in the form of a pep talk from Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K's words worked for the Americans again. John Jenkins scored 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting -- including a 6-of-7 effort from 3-point range -- and the U.S. had little trouble on the way to a 105-71 victory over Uruguay in a World Cup Americas Region qualifying game, with Krzyzewski sitting courtside to enjoy the show. The win, combined with Puerto Rico's 75-72 win over Brazil (5-2) in another qualifier Thursday, put the Americans alone atop of their qualifying group.
