Sources: Magic, Franz Wagner agree on $224M rookie extension

Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has agreed on a five-year, $224 million rookie contract extension -- a deal that could become worth as much as $269 million, sources told ESPN on Friday. Wagner has been a cornerstone of the Magic's revival, averaging 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game last season as Orlando returned to the Eastern Conference playoffs and went 47-35, the franchise's best record since 2010-11. Wagner has had a historic start to his Magic career, joining Shaquille O'Neal, Dwight Howard and Tracy McGrady in scoring at least 4,000 points before his 23rd birthday, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Wagner, whose brother Moe agreed to a new two-year, $22 million deal with Orlando on Tuesday, is considered the best player to come out of Germany since Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki.

Sources: LeBron James staying with Lakers on $104M deal

LeBron James has agreed to return to the Loa Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $104 million contract that includes a player option for 2025-26 and a no-trade clause, sources told ESPN on Wednesday. The deal brings James back for his 22nd NBA season and essentially becomes a one-plus-one deal that allows him to reassess his Lakers and NBA future next summer. James joins Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal as one of only two players in the NBA with no-trade clauses.

LeBron James, who will turn 40 on Dec. 30, is considered one of the greatest players in NBA history. The only player to eclipse 40,000 career points, he is fourth all time in assists, eighth in steals, eighth in 3-pointers made and third in free throws made. Last season, James became the first player to make 20 All-Star teams, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- whom he had already passed for the all-time scoring mark -- for the most in NBA history. James' 20 All-NBA selections and 13 first-team All-NBA selections are also the most in the history of the sport.

Sources: LeBron helps Lakers' cap by signing below-max deal

For the first time in more than a decade, LeBron James will play on a contract below the max level he was eligible to sign, sources told ESPN's Bobby Marks, helping the Los Angeles Lakers avoid salary cap restrictions that could affect their team building in the future. The Lakers announced Saturday that James signed a two-year extension for $101.35 million that would take him through 23 seasons in the league and edge Vince Carter's record 22-year career. The deal is approximately $2.7 million below the $104 million max, sources told Marks. The contract includes a player option for the second season, which grants James, 39, a default no-trade clause by playing two consecutive seasons on one-year guarantees with his veteran status. James' salary allowed the Lakers to avoid the second apron by $45,000, sources told Marks, which would allow L.A. to avoid having its 2032 first-round pick be frozen from being included in a trade next summer as a penalty for carrying a total roster salary well above the salary cap. James has taken a pay cut only once before in his career, in 2010, when he joined the Miami Heat on a two-year, $68.6 million deal. That left $15 million on the table to help the Heat front office assemble a team that went on to make four straight Finals appearances and win two championships.

Sources: Klay Thompson to join Mavericks on 3-year, $50M deal

Free agent guard Klay Thompson has agreed on a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his historic 13-year run with the four-time champion Golden State Warriors. Thompson's deal was largely inspired by the chance to compete for a fifth title with the Western Conference champion Mavericks. In the final season of Thompson's remarkable 13-year Warriors career, his relationship with the franchise became increasingly strained over contract discussions and his looming free agency. His departure became more and more likely as the season progressed.

Klay Thompson made right call moving to Mavs, Steve Kerr says

After his first practice with Team USA ahead of the Olympics, Golen State Warriors coach Steve Kerr addressed the departure of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks and wished the five-time All-Star well after "13 incredible years."

"We are going to miss Klay. We wish him the best. These things rarely go like you want where you get to draw it up and execute it and everybody goes out together. We were hoping that could happen, but it didn't. We wish Klay well, but we love him and we'll miss him." "I think it makes sense for him in his heart to get a different change of pace, change of location," Kerr said. "Get out of California, go play on a different team. It's what's right for him right now."

Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal to join the Mavericks as a free agent Monday; the sign-and-trade with Dallas, which included six teams total, was officilly announced Saturday night.

The Sacemento Kings are acquiring free agent guard DeMar DeRozan in a three-year, $74 million sign-and-trade deal, sources told ESPN on Saturday night. DeRozan, a three-time All-NBA selection, was the ninth pick in the 2009 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors, and he has played for the Raptors, Spurs and Bulls across his 15 NBA seasons.
