New Dune Approaches...

All In With The Nuts
Berg to direct 'Dune' for Paramount
Misher producing adaptation of sci-fi novel

By TATIANA SIEGEL

Peter Berg is attached to direct a bigscreen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures.

Kevin Misher, who spent the past year obtaining the book rights from the Herbert estate, will produce via his Par-based shingle.

Herbert's 1965 novel is a sweeping, futuristic tale set on the remote desert planet Arrakis, which produces the interstellar empire's sole source of the spice Melange -- used for distant space travel. An empirewide power struggle ensues over the control of the spice. Berg would be the latest helmer to take a crack at the property, which spawned a 1984 David Lynch film as well as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries starring William Hurt.

The project is out to writers, with the producers looking for a faithful adaptation of the Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning book. The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely.

New Amsterdam's Richard Rubenstein, who produced Sci Fi's "Dune" and sequel "Children of Dune," is also producing alongside Sarah Aubrey of Film 44, Berg's production banner. John Harrison and Mike Messina exec produce.

Paramount envisions the project as a tentpole film.

Berg and Misher enjoy strong ties dating back to Misher's executive days at Universal Pictures. Misher also produced Berg's second directorial outing, "The Rundown."

Actor-turned-helmer Berg most recently directed the upcoming Will Smith starrer "Hancock." His directing credits include "The Kingdom" and "Friday Night Lights."
LOL HOLLYWOOD SPEAK MAKE NO SENSE LOL TENTPOLE ERECTION LOL

Peter Berg first made it big as an actor in the 90s in "Chicago Hope" and as the guy who bangs Linda Fiorentino in The Last Seduction. He's led a semi-disturbed existence, which may be a benefit for this new project...

I never liked the first film, maybe this one will be more accessable.

HERESY! THE DESERT CHURCH OF LYNCH WILL SMITE THEE DOWN!

God I hope they do well... there is so much to those books, it was hard for Lynch to cram it into three hours.

PREDICTION: Cassie doesn't like it.

"Rundown" & "Friday Night Lights" were good.

I'm sorry but if it doesn't have Patrick Stewart then I'm not watching it.

The David Lynch film was CRAP! lol.

I will watch this new movie with a cynical eye.. I'm not impressed by anything the HLP has squeezed out since FH died. I just can't help but wonder if their lawyers have insisted on making this film consistent with the crap KJA and BH have been pumping out. Don't be surprised if Norma Cenva somehow makes an appearance in Dune, when she wasn't even mentioned in the books until GEoD. Also.. don't be surprised if they indicate that RM Mohiam is Jessica's mother, to suit the new "canon".

OH..God, and lol. tentpole -- Movie expected by a studio to be its biggest grossing blockbuster of the season, usually summer. Often the pic is the start of, or an installment in, a franchise; ""Armageddon" was a successful tentpole in 1998."

DANIEL RADCLIFFE TO PLAY PAUL?

So when I finish Capter House (started it a few days ago...there's Jews in it!) should I not bother reading anything else?

Don't read any of the other shit!

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't, don't really see much point of it's not written by Frank Herbert. At least Chrstopher Tolkien just published every single scrap of paper his father actually wrote rather than just making up crap himself.

I haven't read any of the crap BH and KJA have written, except for the excerpts online.

You can read a sample of their crud from Hunters here: http://www.tor-forge.com/Excerpt.aspx?isbn=9780765351487

and from Sadworms: http://www.tor-forge.com/Excerpt.aspx?isbn=9780765312938

There are a few hardcore Dune fans who think the Legends series was OK... or maybe it's the House series, can't remember. I'm not a fan of KJA's type of sci fi, so I haven't bothered to read any them.

I read the House series, and then started Butlerian Jihad, and yeah - simply okay. Passible. Forgettable. It was interesting to see his take on where the original characters came from, and the setting was consistent, but more and more I got the feeling that Brian was really hoping to gross us out more than tell an involved, rapturous story.

In Jihad, for instance, nearly every interaction with the sentient robots ends with some nameless human getting ripped apart by the soulless machines. Instead of building character and suspense Brian ends up describing just the visceral elements of the torture.

After four hundred pages of it, you just kinda get bored, and as you know what has to happen (humans triumph, yay!) there's no real incentive to find out what happens.

You know they're working on a new trilogy called "Heroes of Dune"? They claim to be FH's biggest fans, but they don't understand the concepts of Dune at all. There were no heroes and those who built themselves up to be heroes ultimately failed. The first one will be "Paul of Dune" out later this year. I think it will focus on the jihad, probably full of space battles. I wouldn't be surprised if they go completely against canon and have Paul and Irulan secretly in love or some shit, cause the next book is going to be about Irulan.

ATOMIIIIIIIIICS!!!

Irulan was kind of forgotten about after the first book. I felt sorry for her. She needed some loving.

This amuses me, because while in no way did Lynch or Harrison Dune come close to being as good as the novel, either one of them are better than BH/KJA Dune books.
