Arthur Smith reaches deal to become Atlanta Falcons' new head coach
The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with Arthur Smith to be the team's new head coach, it was announced Friday. Smith has served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans the past two seasons. Smith, 38, replaces Dan Quinn, whom the Falcons fired along with general manager Thomas Dimitroff on Oct. 11 after an 0-5 start. Raheem Morris took over as interim head coach and led the Falcons to their only wins of the 2020 season en route to a 4-12 overall record. The Titans ranked fourth in the league in scoring during the regular season, averaging 30.7 points per game under Smith. Tennessee finished the regular season averaging 396.4 total yards per game, good for third in the NFL. The Titans' rushing attack posted 168.1 yards per game, second only to that of the Baltimore Ravens (191.9 yards). Smith joined the Titans in 2011 as a defensive quality control coach; he then served multiple other roles in Tennessee, including offensive quality control coach, offensive line assistant and tight ends coach.
Seattle Seahawks WR Josh Gordon suspended indefinitely again
Seahawks wide receiver Josh Gordon been suspended indefinitely again after the NFL rescinded his conditional reinstatement. An NFL spokesperson told ESPN that the decision stems from Gordon violating terms of his conditional reinstatement under the league's substance-abuse policy. No other details were provided from the league. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported last month that Gordon, 29, had another setback in his recovery from substance abuse as he was nearing his return to the field after a yearlong suspension. A source told Fowler at the time that Gordon was grappling with the reality that he might never be allowed to play in the NFL again as indications throughout the process of his reinstatement from that suspension were that this was probably his final strike. Gordon was conditionally reinstated by the NFL last month and was set to practice with the Seahawks in Week 16. Coach Pete Carroll said he had a chance to play that Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. But a day before what would have been Gordon's first official practice in a year, the NFL placed him on the commissioner's exempt list after deeming that he had not satisfied the terms of his conditional reinstatement.
Rivers, 39, never played in a Super Bowl, He ranks fifth in NFL history with 63,440 passing yards, also is fifth in league history with 421 touchdown passes. Rivers passed for 4,169 yards and 24 TDs this past season, leading the Colts to an 11-5 record and a wild-card berth in the AFC playoffs.
Deshaun Watson's trade value and destinations, plus what the Houston Texans do next
The potential inevitable? Deshaun Watson breakup with the Houston Texans is running its natural course, with four stages cleared and more coming: Stage 1: Watson's unhappiness over ownership decisions goes public. Stage 2: Watson doesn't return phone calls from the Texans. Stage 3: An Adam Schefter tweet reminds us that, yes, this is real. Stage 4: Watson and his marketing agent like an Instagram account showcasing a New York Post cover saying the New York Jets must do "WATever it Takes" to get Watson in a trade. Not everyone around the league is convinced the Texans will trade Watson. But we know how these things usually go. And we know the next stages: Stage 5: Houston will "listen" to offers, but isn't actively trading Watson. Stage 6: OK, so now they are initiating trade talks. Stage 7: Teams that really want him try to downplay his importance by pumping up the quarterbacks they already have, but don't like as much.
Detroit Lions actively seek to trade QB Matthew Stafford, sources say
In an arrangement the two sides have discussed and mutually agreed upon, quarterback Mathew Stafford is expected to not return to the Lions this offseason, with Detroit listening to trade offers starting this week, league sources told ESPN on Saturday. With new general manager Brad Holmes and new head coach Dan Campbell now in place, the Lions will soon begin trade discussions that most likely will result in a new quarterback for the team -- largely influenced by what and whom Detroit will get in exchange for Stafford, sources told ESPN. The Lions are expected to receive at least a first-round pick, league sources said. Stafford approached the Lions about the possibility of a trade being in the best interest of both parties, but the franchise tabled that discussion until completing the coach and GM searches, a source told ESPN's Michael Rothstein. He has started 165 games for the Lions since being taken No. 1 overall in the 2009 draft, completing 62.6% of his passes for 45,109 yards, 282 touchdowns and 144 interceptions. He led 38 game-winning drives during his career and 31 fourth-quarter comebacks -- making him one of the better comeback quarterbacks in league history.
