The Mississippi Department of Human Services on Monday sued retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre, three former pro wrestlers and several other people and businesses to try to recover millions of misspent welfare dollars that were intended to help some of the poorest people in the United States. The lawsuit says the defendants "squandered" more than $20 million in money from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families anti-poverty program. The suit was filed less than two weeks after a mother and son who ran a nonprofit group and an education company in Mississippi pleaded guilty to state criminal charges tied to the misspending. Nancy New, 69, and Zachary New, 39, agreed to testify against others in what State Auditor Shad White has called Mississippi's largest public corruption case in the past two decades.

Tom Brady will join Fox Sports as its lead NFL analyst when his playing career ends. Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced the news Tuesday during an earnings call. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback will call games alongside lead play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt and will work as an "ambassador" for Fox with a focus on "client and promotional initiatives." Brady, who turns 45 in August, becomes the latest superstar quarterback to pursue a post-retirement media career. Tony Romo has been the lead NFL analyst at CBS since 2017 after a 14-year career with the Dallas Cowboys. Drew Brees worked as a football analyst at NBC last year after 20 seasons in the NFL, and Peyton Manning and Eli Manning teamed up last season on ESPN's "ManningCast" broadcast of Monday Night Football. Brady briefly retired earlier this offseason but announced in March that he had changed his mind and will return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022 season.

Starting next year, the XFL will have all its regular-season and playoff games air on ESPN and other networks owned by The Walt Disney Company as part of a multiyear agreement, it was announced Tuesday. Beginning in February 2023 and continuing through the spring, 40 regular-season XFL games, two playoff semifinals and a title game will appear on ESPN, ABC and FX, it was revealed at Disney's upfront event. The eight-team XFL is returning under new owners Dany Garcia, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Gerry Cardinale's RedBird Capital Partners. In February, the XFL reached a partnership agreement with the NFL that will focus on creating innovation programs and protecting the health of players.

Mike Pettine has long understood the problem: a lack of diversity among NFL coaches. This spring, he was inspired to do something about it. Pettine, in his first season as the Minnesota Vikings' assistant head coach, organized a three-day coaching diversity summit this week at team headquarters, a program designed to increase the diverse candidate pool for entry-level NFL jobs. Eleven men and one woman -- Roseanna Smith, an assistant coach at Oberlin College -- will spend their time participating in mock interviews, learning the NFL's culture, listening in on coaching meetings and working an OTA practice. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich are among more than 60 diverse head coach and general manager candidates slated to attend the inaugural coach and front office accelerator program next week at the NFL spring meetings in Atlanta. Each NFL team nominated at least one candidate to attend the two-day program, which is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday to coincide with the NFL's meetings. The main goal of the program is to get minority candidates for head coach and GM openings face time with the league's highest-ranking decision-makers. The idea grew out of feedback the league's diversity committee received at the NFL scouting combine in March from candidates, some who were successful and some who were not from the most recent coach/GM hiring cycle.

Report: Michael Vick will leave retirement to join Fan Controlled Football
Michael Vick, the once-dynamic NFL quarterback whose involvement in a dogfighting ring paused a breathtaking career in its prime, has agreed to come out of retirement to join startup league Fan Controlled Football, a source told Reuters on Friday. Vick, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL draft and who last suited up for an NFL game in 2015, will make his debut on May 28, the last day of the regular season, according to the source, who said an official announcement is expected next week. The 41-year-old has not yet been assigned a team. Vick is the latest high-profile player to sign up with Fan Controlled Football, joining a group that includes Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and Johnny Manziel, whose much-hyped NFL career fizzled out after two seasons. Vick officially retired in 2017 after having passed for 22,464 yards and 133 touchdowns during 13 NFL seasons, and his 6,109 career rushing yards remains the most by a quarterback.

Judge denies NFL's motions to dismiss Jon Gruden's lawsuit, move it to arbitration
A Nevada judge ruled in favor of former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden on two motions Wednesday, opening the possibility of a jury trial on his "tortious interference" claim that the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell selectively leaked Gruden's emails to force his removal on Oct. 11. Judge Nancy L. Allf denied the NFL's motion to compel arbitration as well as the league's motion to dismiss the case outright. The suit will now go to trial unless a settlement is reached. Allf gave no timeline, though, for the next proceeding.The NFL said in a statement given to multiple media outlets that it would appeal." We believe Coach Gruden's claims should have been compelled to arbitration, and we will file an appeal of the Court's determination. The Court's denial of our motion to dismiss is not a determination on the merits of Coach Gruden's lawsuit, which, as we have said from the outset, lacks a basis in law and fact and proceeds from a false premise -- neither the NFL nor the Commissioner leaked Coach Gruden's offensive emails."
