We know Jack and the others are lying about being the only six survivors, and they are saying they landed in the water near an island in the south pacific, the world already knows the plane was found in Bali.
The only way they can tie those two events together is to say the plane had a decompression event, and some of the passengers where sucked out, and survived their fall into the sea, then the plane carried on for thousands of more miles, before finally ditching into the ocean.
We know Ben is alive and pulling Syieds strings, the way he manipulates things, its possible he was the one decided only 6 people could go home publicly.
Because the more people who supposedly survived the crash, the more attention would have been paid to the plane at the bottom of the sea, and the more likely someone would tell the real story, blowing things for the people on the island.
Its very likely some of the survivors chose to stay on the island, also its likely some of the other ones found some part of the world where they could blend in quietly under assumed names, with noone looking for them since they were assumed dead.
If Micheal and Walt made it back to America, they must have used assumed names, otherwise people would wonder how they survived the crash.
So if they can do it, others can too.
