Official Trek 11 countdown/news thread

Apparently black IS the captains uniform.

Nice to see that Apple now designs Starship bridges.

There's a Shinzon...Nero, I mean, pic too.

Saruman's gonna be pissed when he finds his staff's gone missing!!

Seriously, I thought Saruman as well...

Well, okay, we got to see how they fucked up the bridge, how did the fuck up the rest of the ship?

This is a wider shot of the Kelvin, which is a similar, but older ship than the Enterprise.

I suppose it's meant to be ugly since it's older.. but I still hate the shape of the saucer.

The Enterprise bridge isn't so bad considering how it could have been. At least you can see they drew inspiration from the original and everything is laid out in more or less the same way, it just looks a lot more sleek. I would've liked to have seen them use the colours of the original (red and black is timeless), but the only thing that really annoys me is that stupid console where Uhura will probably be stationed.

I think thats only there so someone can smash through it the first time the ship rocks violently from side to side.

WTF is the Kelvin's warp nacelle doing up there? VECTORING NACELLES OMG!?!?!

The opening sequence, for example, is an emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ''Heresy!'' But revisionism anxiety is the point. ''The movie,'' Lindelof says, ''is about the act of changing what you know.''

OMG RAPE.

^ I'd be worried by that statement if I could figure out what it means. I've read spoilers and it doesn't sound like the first scene would make anybody cry.

A lot of people say otherwise, but I think that's the deflector dish and the nacelle is below the saucer.

Isn't that the deflector under the saucer though? Why would they change the appearance of nacelles and deflector dishes, other than to confuse and anger fans!?

Gawd, it looks like one of those pre-internet non-canon* drawings from the fan literature of the 1970's, where they just re-arranged all the parts in whatever bizarre configuration they could cement together. I always hated those things.

Luckily (or sadly, depending) someone loved them enough to reproduce them digitally so you can see what I mean:

There's actually a lot of cool work in that account, though.

*And before anybody mentions it: DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED on that goddamn 3-nacelle Enterprise-D from "All Good Things..."

I'm sad enough to know that the last three were designed by Franz Joseph, who pissed off Gene Roddenberry somehow, so he made rules forbidding Trek ships from having odd number warp nacelles (because all of Franz Joseph's designs indeed had odd numbered nacelles).

I've always liked the dreadnaught myself, but yeah, the others are pretty lame.

Isn't that the deflector under the saucer though? Why would they change the appearance of nacelles and deflector dishes, other than to confuse and anger fans!?

The one at the top is blue like a deflector (maybe with a gold dish at the centre, hard to tell) and the one at the bottom is red like a nacelle cap. Makes sense to me.

Meant to be older than what? Looks like somebody tried to build an ERTL model of the TMP Enterprise while on a seriously wicked acid trip.

Or how they have a whole panel devoted to showing the Warp factor -- kind of like having the whole front windshield of your car plastered with a HUD -- that shows nothing but a gigantic speedometer. Idiots.

That's basically the only reason, except possibly the idiotic notion that they can pull in "a wider fan base." As if changing the way the spaceships look will suddenly appeal to people who, for the last 40+ years, already didn't like Star Trek.

The people behind this are morons.

Or maybe the Romulans have a weapon that, when fired, randomly rearranges the parts of federation starships.

The Kelvin's a ship that's in service when Kirk's a little boy, so the Enterprise should look less basic and lame.

They should have used a NX Class ship for the Kelvin just to make the internet explode.

Or maybe the Romulans have a weapon that, when fired, randomly rearranges the parts of federation starships.

And randomly pulls design elements from future ships and slaps it around just for kicks. The worst effect of all, however, is to give clueless Hollywood hacks the idea that they can make jocks and bobble-headed bleacher-warmers like Star Trek by screwing with it until the geeks don't like it anymore.
