You can choose Dimension Dark theme and it looks like it did before

I can't seem to find the place to do that.

It's only an option for admins right now. The old Dimension Dark is running on a woefully outdated stylesheet so I don't want to enable it for everyone. What I will do is build an alternative theme with smaller avatars and make it switchable for everyone.
