ll was right in the world of the WWE a week ago. Even two days ago, things were good.
After Randy Orton punted Vince in the head on Raw last week, it became clear that WWE could have their new main guy, their new top draw.
Then on Sunday night at the Royal Rumble, it was clear that Randy Orton was going to be pushed to the moon as the company heads towards WrestleMania.
Then Raw happened. And Orton got…well, Orton’d. Actually, no. Orton got shit on by some of the worst booking ever seen in an angle that made TNA’s booking look better and more logical than Gabe Sapolsky’s best work in Ring of Honor.
Orton has worked his ass off over the past year or so. I was never a fan of his but his work has got better and better over time to the point where yesterday morning I was thinking that by the end of 2009, he could be a hotter heel act than Edge has been on Smackdown over the past year.
But after last night, I just can’t believe how WWE’s creative team put together a show that saw their top heel on the show turn from potentially the hottest heel they’ve had this decade to a joke with less credibility than a comedy character such as Santino Morella.
This was the worst edition of Raw in a long, long time, with the show ending with the worst segment of a WWE show I can remember in years.
The show started on a bad enough note, with Orton blaming what happened to Vince on him having IED. He came out with his legal team and a therapist (a therapist!) and threatened to sue WWE if he wasn’t in the main event of WrestleMania. The segment was a total fail I thought. Orton’s character doesn’t suit this approach and as Todd Martin noted in his Raw report (and if you’ve not seen the show yet, save yourself a couple of hours and just read his recap instead), its something which would suit Chris Jericho much better than the likes of Orton.
I’m not going to talk about what happened during the entire show as Todd has it covered in his Raw recap. I’m going to reserve judgment on the Mickey Rourke-Chris Jericho tease and see what happens over the next couple of weeks. From last night though, it certainly seemed like they were playing it as Rourke actually wrestling. We’ll see.
So to the end of Raw. Stephanie McMahon called out Orton, who came out with his Legacy buddies and threatened to sue again and have WrestleMania cancelled. All the Raw roster (bar Cena, JBL and Michaels from what I could see…they were probably trying to come to terms with the stupid decision to involve Cena in an Elimination Chamber QUALIFYING match) came out. The idea I guess was that they were all pissed that Orton could cancel Mania and they wouldn’t get to perform on the biggest show of the year. Why Jim Duggan and Charlie Haas didn’t just sit in the back is beyond me.
Anyway, Orton begged Stephanie to fire him. But then…here comes the money!
Shane McMahon came to ringside, upset and angry over Orton’s actions last week.
Now think of all the possibilities for this angle at this point. I guarantee you can’t book anything worse than what actually transpired. Did Orton punt Stephanie? No. Did Orton punt Shane? No. Did WWE do anything to continue making Orton look like an awesome heel as they had done on last week’s show and during the Rumble? Fuck no. Instead, non-wrestler Shane, in his late 30s, with greying hair and looking in bad condition, proceeded to beat the crap out of Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.
To make things even worse, non-wrestler Shane blew up within 30 seconds and looked a mess in there, throwing some of the worst punches you’ve ever seen, which led to Legacy selling for punches that hadn’t even come close to hitting the mark. It would have been funny if it wasn’t so dumb.
Shane even snapped at a couple of wrestlers at the top of the ramp, with poor Kofi Kingston, who earlier had won entry into the Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out, looking stunned after taking a couple of “hard” right hands.
It was the worst segment of a WWE wrestling show I can remember in a long, long time.
Has it ruined WrestleMania? No. Well, not yet anyway. The key thing now is what happens next week on Raw. Orton looks like such as wuss as a result of last night’s show. He should have punted Stephanie’s head off, then done the same to Shane. That could have led to Linda appearing next week and having her face kicked into the bleachers as well. Instead, Orton just looks weak after last night’s show. He would have looked weak if a wrestler had come in and done that. But Shane? Its just nonsensical, ass-backward McMahon booking that the live crowd just didn’t get into at all and left me shaking my head.
This could be quite a newsworthy week with regards to television, but for the wrong reasons. TNA taped Impact last night which we have spoilers up at this link, while Smackdown tapes tonight with the focus almost certainly being on Matt Hardy and why he turned on his brother, Jeff. While I can see the positives of that angle, there’s so many reasons why it shouldn’t be Matt who was behind the attacks at Survivor Series last year. That means Matt has to deliver a killer promo to make that angle work (and Matt is hardly a great promo) otherwise I fear Matt vs. Jeff could be a huge flop.
After taking a few steps forward heading into the Rumble, WWE took a hundred back last night.
OK, that does sound pretty retarded and typical WWE style of taking their own shit off the boil once again.
Wacky did you see it? Was it as pointless and bad as reported?
